Having played Nier, I come to ask myself: "Can acclaimed game critics all over the globe be wrong?" Well, the answer to me is clear and I will spell it in capital letters. YES THEY ARE MISTAKEN! I'm glad I picked this game at 9,99 from Amazon despite all the game reviews that would deter people off. Nier is the best example of a game, that proves that sometimes it's best to judge certain things by yourself. Nier was an amazing ride and certainly one of the most enjoyable games I have yet to play. For those who see things through to the final possible end, Nier is a dramatically original choice that has a genuine impact on more than just the game world. The soundtrack of Nier is also unforgettable. So far, it is hands down the best soundtrack of any game I have yet to play. Nier is an example of how a game can win you over through sound. It's one of those games that you can sit back and listen to the pretty music and enchanting tunes for hours. If you are still wondering whether to buy this game, the soundtrack alone is well worth the price. Nier falls into the action - RPG category but doesn't follow strict guidelines, instead it tries to offer variety by mixing so many elements of game-play that can at some extend please everyone. It's like some sort of everybody wins situation! There is simple no reason i can think of why you shouldn't buy this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a good game. 25 May 2010

Critics have been a bit harsh with this game. It has many flaws, but is very captivating and original. The characters as well as the story are very interesting. The game is also filled with mini games and quests, and if you want to finish everything you'll need a good 40-50 hours. It also has multiple endings. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but it's definitely worth being purchased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 16 Jan 2011

I put off buying Nier due to the lukewarm reviews, but I tried it when I was betwen other "must-have" games and I really enjoyed it. As far as I am concerned it is a successful and thought-provoking game.

Nier is from Square-Enix, but it's nothing like Final Fantasy or any other games from that tribe. The closest comparison I would make would be "Ico". More on that later. To keep it simple, you play in Nier as one character, who is searching for a cure for his sick daughter. Nier's world is rural, with a peasant-style village, open plains and rivers and lakes. You run around the world in real time, going between lost temples, other settlements, deserts and caves, following clues that might lead you to saving the life of your daughter. Although classed as an RPG, these elements are very much in the background - Nier does level up but you'll never know when he's about to as there are no EXP points in-screen (although you can examine the menu to see them) and no numerical health bar or hit-points seen in attacking. There are various weapons, you can buy or find better ones, and you can learn magic, although all the magic is for attacking, there are no healing or support spells. Fighting is done real time - enemies can clearly be seen on the screen, and the fighting style is pretty easy to master, very simple combos done with one button plus a few linked to jumping, evading and blocking.

So let me address the good and bad points that a lot of reviewers have pointed out - first that this game is ugly to look at. Well, I would not say that. It is not richly detailed, I'll admit, but it has a certain style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the other non-final fantasies 2 May 2010
By Marty

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Square Enix have been releasing a lot of games over the past two years, but none of them have come close to recapturing the success of the Final Fantasy series. Some were great games - like Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant, but failed to really make the player care that much about the characters like in FF.
This latest effort is getting closer, however there are many factors that ultimately stop this from being potentially great. The main issues are related to the visual presentation - this looks like an average ps2 title, with less graphical detail than FFX. Menus are very basic too and the whole thing looks a bit drab. Furthermore the main character isn't the most likeable of protagonists. Finally, cutscenes are hindered by these strange transparent black letterbox bars that distract from the action - it's a really odd decision to put these in.
Ok, now for the why this game is worth having in any avid rpg fan's collection. It combines the best elements of greatest rpg games and does so to great success. The charm of Zelda, battle system of Soul Reaver and setting of Dark Cloud. And then something entirely new is introduced - a soundtrack unlike any other in a video game to date. These tunes are seriously catchy and have vocal melodies that suit the atmosphere perfectly, and in many cases create the atmosphere. Also, the story is memorable and the characters really grow on you, with some genuinely funny moments between them.
So if you're done with Final Fantasy 13 and want a new experience before Versus 13, then this is worth a go. It's an enjoyable adventure that will definitely bring back memories of the great rpgs of the past!!
