3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag 12 Mar 2011
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I'm not gonna ride the hate train with this game as I didn't find it "insultingly" bad - Just flawed. It has its charms and moments. They just seem to be overshadowed by the diabolical AI and badly written dialogue.

I found the online mode to be very interesting and a change from the average "Team Deathmatch" style modes that get added as an afterthought to most games. It feels alot like Demon's Souls - though perhaps not as punishing - in that people jump into your game to invade or help you in the campaign. This has the capability to turn the easiest sections into impossible encounters if your "hackers" are very good. It loses the challenge though when people resort to booting as almost any game I join as a red hacker I get booted for being "too good" it seems. If you can't take the shame, don't play the game!

The controls, while not terrible, don't help you much. You'll find yourself accidentally sticking to cover and I wouldn't advise trying to melee enemies as it's useless.

It's true that Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy did the mind control element a little better, however it didn't have the option to turn enemies into AI slaves, Demon's Souls did the hacker style jump-in better and Uncharted 2/Gears of War did the cover-based shooter mechanic better but Mindjack still has its moments where it stands out from the crowd. Find it cheap and give it a try.

3.0 out of 5 stars A special 'something' 25 Aug 2011
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I won't comment on the gameplay, graphics, story, etc, because I think the existing user created reviews cover those quite well. In a nutshell, they range from OK (but not great) to poor.

However, I think the 'special something' that Mindjack definitely has is the jump-in/jump-out feature which allows you to either fight alongside or against other Players in their campaign. In my very first play session, I found myself fighting against other Players, which provided a really fascinating experience because it prevented the combat from becoming stale or predictable. I later tried joining other peoples games, and had a lot of fun both as an ally and as the opposition. I can see myself popping into this game for some co-op fun every once in a while, even after I've finished it.

In short, for the low price, I would recommend getting this game if the above sounds intriguing for you. What have you got to lose apart from the price of a Whopper Meal? :-)

1.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time but no thank you 4 Aug 2011
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Having found this game at great price I was looking forward to playing it. What sold it to me was the maker.

I love Square Enix! Makers of Final Fantasy and many other awesome titles. I'll generally buy anything they bring out..... I may re-think this strategy based on my experience and also having been recently disappointed with other titles like Final Fantasy 13 and some lesser known Square games.

Gameplay - Poor
Story - I wasn't interested enough to bother paying attention
Graphics - Good
Sound - Likewise wasn't interested

Now put that all aside for a second. The concept of this title is awesome but I think it got rushed out the door too early. On a next generation console this title would fly and be mindblowing! Unfortunately it is lacklustre, clunky and a real shame that Square didn't put their usual "finish" into this title.

Am I being hard on Mindjack.. yes! However it is a competitive market and I expected much better from Square.

I would rent this first if you were thinking of buying. However I have already traded my copy in for something I will play again.

Better luck next time Square.
