I've tried various PC maintenance utilities over the years. It becomes somewhat compulsive to keep your PC well-oiled and as free from junk as possible. This is amongst the most effective spyware packages I've found.

The software is very clean and easy to use. It comes provided with a simple manual which tells you clearly what the package does. Basically, this falls into two areas: Intelliguard and the Scanning tools. Intelliguard is a set of guards (browser guard, cookie guard, email guard, file guard, keylogger guard, network guard, process guard, site guard, startup guard, immunizer guard and behaviour guard) which block your computer from various threats in real time. It does work. I've had various message windows offering to block out things my Norten protection didn't (banners for adult sites were filtered out and blocked easily). I see people have suffered slowdown from this option. I haven't had any noticable problems; I'm on firefox 3 and it seems as fast as ever. If you do have problems, Intelliguard is highly customisable and you can switch off (or adjust) each single guard. Like I say though, I had no problems running all the guards and they do seem effective.

The other part of the software is the scanning tools. There are various scans you can run or you can just do a full scan (which is comprehensive and takes about 2 hours on my system). On the first scan it picked up 250 threats on my PC which Norten had let through. On each subsequent scan I've had only 1 or 2 threats which proves the tools for Intelliguard are doing their job. The scans themselves are similar to other spyware/antivirus scans and let you explore what threats you are going to remove before you do.

All in all I'm very impressed. The software is easy to use and seems to do a good job, efficiently and thoroughly. My obsessive 'Clean PC' compulsive disorder is sated for the time being :)

The software is quite easy to install, but if you already have an anti-virus running like I have (I use Kaspersky) the anti-virus element on Spyware can be disabled.

I did find it rather awkward to use at first, since it does cause PC to boot much slower, although once booted, and the Spyware set for scan, it is rather efficient in picking up unwanted spyware and adware and cookies. A warning does come up though if you attempt to delete cookies since it may disrupt certain programmes that you may be running.

Overall, a useful tool to have, although some users may find some of the elements such as Intelliguard causing one or two problems. It did cause my PC to crash when using it the first time. But like everything else, its trial and error until you get used to it.

PC Tools is a company that has provided a wide range of PC security and tune up software for about the last five years. Their best known product is Spyware Doctor and the latest version (2009) is featured here. The company make their software available in a number of different packages and this version includes Antivirus software as well. A cheaper version has just the Spyware Doctor 2009 and the more expensive PC Tools Internet Security Suite 2009 has this package plus Firewall, Behaviour Guard and comprehensive filtering. It really depends whether you use other Antivirus products or not as to which package is best for you.

If you already have an Antivirus programme running then the basic Spyware Doctor 2009 is all you need to enhance it. This version adds antivirus for those without it or those looking for a change from their current one. This software has won many awards and is well regarded in the industry.

Like most of its competitors this software can be installed on up to three computers and is licensed for online updates for a year. It can look after itself for use by novices but also has features for more advanced users. Not as resource hungry as some competitors it is nevertheless ready to pounce at the first sign of trouble. If you are just looking for Internet safety, with no unwanted frills, PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Antivirus 2009 offers it to you in a first class product.

It was announced in August that PC Tools was to become part of the mighty Symantec Corporation. The company will theoretically maintain its independence and, hopefully, will continue to develop award winning products.
