4.0 out of 5 stars a FREE bit of lighthearted fun 13 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a good fun read which didn't take itself too seriously but provided good entertainment. Maddie lives in LA and her boyfriend gets in to increasing amounts of legal trouble as the book goes on. She turns amateur sleuth which is very funny and helps the book tick along. On the negative side it is full of American metaphors and abbreviations which I didn't get, although the kindle dictionary very helpful! Also I feel I could pass a taxi exam to work in LA as every single road driven on is written about - unnecessary! In all a great little read which was all the more enjoyable as it was free! Recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good lighthearted fun! 15 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm new to kindle and I have been having much fun reading the free books. This was lighthearted fun and I finished it in a day. Story was well thought out, characters were enjoyable, plot was well paced and didn't really stall at any point. Only downside was that the main character eats a LOT of junk food and made me really crave a Big Mac Meal, which was not good for my diet ;)!! Highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Clueless in high heels... 7 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The heroine is a childish airhead [the author thinks these qualities are cute and funny], who stumbles across clues and situations by accident as she clearly doesn't have a brain to try and investigate with. The cop isn't too bad as a character, but the way he discusses a open homicide investigation with the lead is so unrealistic - why couldn't the author take a bit more time to think of other way to put the needed information across to the lead in a more engaging way?

Overall; this was a painfully slow read - I wanted to see the lead die by the end of the book. Also; the killer was obvious from the first scene they were in, because the author's attempts to toss in a red herring, by trying to draw attention to a suspicious character, just throws a spotlight over the guilty party.

I wouldn't say that the author is completely untalented, but she is rather sloppy and hasn't taken any time to add an actual mystery into the book; just a series of unlikely coincidences, which don't comfortably fit together. The length of time the lead has been dating her boyfriend changes, the day of her mother's upcoming bachelorette party and wedding changes, private businesses are unrealisticly open and staffed over weekends and there are numerous other errors scattered throughout the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and believeable...a very good read! 8 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love my murder mysteries and this was particularly hard to put down as at the end of every other chapter there was a cliff-hanger - a revelation that astonished and spoiled all asumptions previously made about the involvement of the characters. The story also swings between serious and comical but the storyline is superb and the characters utterly believable. Maddie Springer who designs children's shoes, is an ordinary person with an ordinary life and an ordinary lawyer boyfriend, Richard. She then swings from this to investigating a murder and a 20 million dollar emmbezzlement trying to clear Richard's name even though the odds are against her efforts when he disappears and she's left in a quandary as to his innocence, especially when things about him that she never knew start to surface. At one point she's even a suspect herself. Then, it seems, someone wants her out of the way. And she has something important to reveal of her own, but the thorn in her side becomes one of the sexiest police officers she has ever met, Ramirez, and that further complicates matters. It's then a race against time for all concerned. It was a great read and here begins my journey into the rest of the 'High Heels' series with gusto! Well done Gemma Halliday.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chick lit with a bit of a mystery. 19 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As mentioned by previous reviewers this is a light, fun read which has the added spice of some mystery. It is ideal when you are really not into the "heavy" type book.
Maddie is fashion mad, a junk food eater and thinks that she may be pregnant. When boyfriend Richard disappears she turns amateur sleuth to find him....along the way she however finds 1. that she did not know him as well as she thought as there are many surprises in store for her ( I will not mention which) 2. She has an interest for some other hunk that crosses her road and is also looking for Richard.
Quite a good fun read to pass a few hours.

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, fluffy and slow paced 4 Jan. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The title suggests that this is an espionage novel which features a sophisticated lady in the title role. Nothing could be further from the content of this book. The book starts with a young woman whose lawyer boyfriend suddenly disappears and she attempts to find him before the police do. A number of bodies show up and the lawyer boyfriend is in the frame. She starts to realise that she doesn't know all that much about her boyfriend but keeps excusing him, even when she finds out that he is married. She starts to fall for the cop who is investigating the murders and keeps getting in the way of his investigation. There are quite a few unlikely scenarios that occur but the basic plot is pretty clear from the outset except for the one twist in the tale. All the other twists and turns are very predictable. Also her mother is getting remarried but has to reschedule as the original venue suffers a landslide and ends up in the sea, and she has a love hate relationship with her pregnancy tests. First she can't bring herself to use it and then when she does it fails to work properly at least three times. Perhaps a book when you need to while away some time like on a flight but otherwise I wouldn't bother and I'm not looking for anything else from this author.
