Amazon.co.uk Review

Spun is an unclassifiable ensemble piece, intentionally bleached of soulfulness and high on visual invention and comic depravity. Set in northern Los Angeles, where meth freaks lurch from one motel room to another in search of companionship and a score, the film stars Jason Schwartzman as Ross, whose life is rapidly disintegrating. Fielding phone messages from his mother and trying in vain to reach an old girlfriend, Ross spends most of his time on a feverish circuit with the half-mad Cookie (Mena Suvari) and Nikki (Brittany Murphy), the dangerously paranoid Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), and a macho drugmaker called the Cook (Mickey Rourke). Director Jonas Akerlund's story is non-existent, but then again Spun is driven by the blurry, hellish energy of a life lived on speed. An obvious influence is Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, but Akerlund is interested in nightmarish set pieces than tiny horrors of misfired nerve endings and ravaged time. --Tom Keogh

By The Truth TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I'd never heard of this film but bought it second hand on the off chance it might be good - and it was. Both I and my flat mate both enjoyed it immensely from the offset.

Seriously, from the opening scene we were like: "This looks good. Let's just hope it can keep it up." And it did.

Funny, stylish, a great musical score, creative direction, naked chicks, drugs, brilliant characters and amazing acting - I mean what more do you want?

Mickey Rourke is great in it as ''The Cook'' and the sadly demised Brittany Murphy looks stunning (in a trashy sort of way) and gives a sterling performance - just one of many by the films cast, because seriously, every actor in the film did a great job!

This film is über, über cool and I agree with another review I saw briefly on here: Cult Classic!! It simply screams cult classic!! That's immediately what I thought when I'd watched it. Sadly with Brittany's death the film looks even more qualified to earn that title one day.

For some reason, not many people have heard of this film and I take great pleasure in looking like a top film boffin when I put them onto a great little flick which they all really enjoy watching. It really is very good and if you're into cinematography, screen writing, directing or film making of any kind - I think you'll really, really, really enjoy this little gem for the creative way it's been shot.

So what are you waiting for: If sex, drugs and rock'n'roll are your thing - okay maybe not rock'n'roll - but if sex, drugs, comedy, creativity and great acting are your thing, then click buy because you're gonna love this title.

Please mark this review as helpful if you found it to be and if not, please comment on why so I can do a better job for you next time. Thanks: )

Future Cult Classic 27 Feb 2004
Format:DVD
Back in Januray 2002, i found myself in Arizona right at the time that years Sundance Festival was on. With only the Grand Caynon and a few hundred miles between me and Park City, Utah, I flagged down the next passing Greyhound, and headed north.......and i'm i glad i made the effort!
From the pages of a packed listings guide jumped the little gem that is Spun. With a cast as good as any big budget tosh, a soundtrack penned by the god like Billy Corgan, Spun is the story of a gang of Meth addicted drop-out's. Written by a reformed addicted while in jail, and directed by a a top class video auetor, each scene is both darkly comic and ultimatly saddening. Micky Rourke's comeback preformance is stunning to say the least. With the Meth problem desolving todays american youth, this mesmorising debut charts it's origen and growth, from the towns and Cities of the "beautiful" Pacific Northwest.

The cover image clearly shows the Uncensored Director's Cut, and I bought this expecting that version. However, I received the vanilla edition, which with the p+p, I could have purchased elsewhere for less.

Is the cover image a mistake, or is this a clever ploy to sell more of the vanilla version, by false advertising? Come on Amazon, display the right cover image so that others aren't duped into buying the wrong dvd version!

Ugly film, about ugly people.
This film has nothing to recommend it. It perhaps shows how sad and boring those who think drug taking is cool and interesting are. Read more
