Book Description

1 Oct 2007
Drawing from a rich and influential heritage that spans the 20th century, design in Palm Springs runs the gamut from Spanish hacienda-style architecture and interiors to classic mid-century constructions and contemporary experimentations. Its recent rediscovery by trend-setters like Tom Ford, Jonathan Adler, and Bruce Weber has made Palm Springs superhot again-as a destination and for design inspiration. This desert laboratory of avant-garde architecture, interior decorating, and freewheeling experimentation is now a focus for design and fashion fanatics around the world. "Palm Springs Living" showcases the inspiring, diverse range of exteriors and interiors in Palm Springs. Included are intimate peeks into the private homes of celebrity residents and brand-new photography of the legendary Modernist houses by Richard Neutra, Albert Frey, and many others. There is also the dramatic setting of Palm Springs and Palm Desert: swimming pools and private terraces set in rocky hillsides, desert evenings with the hills turning pink, and the dramatic mountain backdrop. Ultimately, Palm Springs remains a livable fantasy-the sun always shines and the architecture and interiors, unbound from winter's cold blasts and the workaday world, offer a vision of the stylish life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive as well as beautiful view of Palm Springs! 27 Nov 2008
By ky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautifully photographed collection of the "diversity" that truly is the Palm Springs lifestyle. As a long-term resident, I can say that Palm Springs offers so much more than what has been so commonly and myopically portrayed. I was saddened by the reviewer who was actually disappointed that this was not another book on mid-century architecture. Architecture is, of course, honorably represented here but this book is about the people who actually inhabit it. Of the many related books on this topic, this is the one I bought multiple copies of to give as gifts. Thanks again, Rizzoli, for yet another stellar product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Luscious and alluring 5 Nov 2009
By Tom Dolle - Published on Amazon.com

What a beautiful coffee table book (or should I say COCKTAIL table book). For those of us who crave an extended stay in Palm Springs, it captures the glamour, beauty and fabulous indoor/outdoor living that make it a mecca for mid-century modern architecture and design. What's interesting is that Diane Dorrans Saeks also shows luscious earlier interiors, and places that don't fit the mid-century mold. There's an arty-funky side to this desert oasis, as well as over-the-top decorators, capturing the quirky personality that makes Palm Springs so unique. David Glomb's photographs are superb.

This book (Palm Springs Living), together with Julius Shulman's Palm Springs are a MUST for any Palm Springs, mid-century modern architecture's lover. The photographs are superb and inspiring and capture that beautiful place and the decadent lifestyle associated with Palm Springs quite well. For any mid-century culture's aficionado, this book is required reading and Amazon's price on it is hard to beat.

I love this book. But then I am in love Palm Springs!..The book covers different era's of style from spanish revival to mod desert.
The book has given me even more ideas to work with on my own home...the hard decision being a bit of spanish mixed with mod?...Absolutely a must book if you love Palm Springs and its architecture.

1.0 out of 5 stars WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! 19 Feb 2013

This book is a book about Palm Springs and makes two mere mentions of John Lautner and no photos of his buildings. A book on Palm Springs without the Hope Residence and the Elrod House is ridiculous. Stay away from this waste of paper.
