Spring the Summer - and Autumn and Winter Long too,
By A Customer
This review is from: Spring the Summer Long (Audio CD)
Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham are incapable of playing an unmusical note. Spring the Summer Long is an album for lovers of Scottish traditional music in its purist form. It is full of clear melodic lines, simple harmonies and sparkling virtuosity. However, if you prefer them playing high-octane reels at full tilt (like I do) you might be ever so slightly disappointed. Many of the tracks are slow airs and waltzes, very mellow and understated: music to chill out to. Not until the final track, a set of reels, does the sheer joy of speed we associate with Aly and Phil break out. One small criticism: I found the rather 'country and western' backing to Boo Baby's Lullaby (track 8) just a little bit slushy - out of place among the breath-taking purity of the rest of their playing.
