Spring Awakening is based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 drama, which was scandalous in its day for addressing sex, violence and suicide. The story, dialogue and costumes suggest the 19th Century, and are perfectly wedded to a beautiful alternative pop music score by Grammy® nominated singer/songwriter Duncan Sheik, described by Entertainment Weekly as ‘the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade’. The creative team also includes Tony® Award Winning director Michael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and legendary choreographer Bill T. Jones. Upon the show’s debut, The New York Times proclaimed that ‘Broadway may never be the same!’ while The Washington Post described the show as ‘Spellbinding! With a melodic score that fuses ethereal pop and irreverent punk, the show is a giant leap forward for the rock musical. Spring Awakening makes a powerful claim on the heart’. The original Broadway production went on to win eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The soundtrack itself was honoured with a 2008 Grammy Award for Best Musical Score Album.

I thought it was a fab musical and the music is well worth buying to keep- cheaper than getting it at the theatre. The music is really catchy and well worth a listen if you've never heard it before!

After seeing this musical recently I fell love with the music. It was emotive and rock heavy and delightfully witty. I recommend this to any fan of Spamalot, Wicked, Rent and We Will Rock You. This music will appeal to anyone who was ever a teenager and anyone who remembers what it was like to survive. With songs such as Totally F****d, which screams of youthful anger and frustration, to the more sombre The Dark I Know So Well, which has a haunting melody and a sad reminder of darkness that hides in many. If you haven't seen the musical all I ask is, what are you waiting for?

Show CD
What a great show and what a great recording. I recomend this to anyone interested in Broadway/West End shows. Also anyone who like great songs and lyrics.
