Product Description

Review

However outrageous the E4 teen comedy The Inbetweeners gets, there is little in its portrayal of adolescent angst that Frank Wedekind didn't do first in Spring Awakening. --Guardian

Product Description

Number eighty five in NHB's Drama Classics Series, providing the world's great drama at a great price.

The introduction to this edition of Spring Awakening includes a short biography of Frank Wedekind a guide to what happens in the play; a short study of the background, structure and themes; a study of the play's struggle against censorship, and an index of key dates.

Frank Wedekind's once-banned and still controversial German play from 1891 focuses on a group of classmates and explores teenage sexuality holding up a mirror to our own times. The play depicts with candour well ahead of its time adolescent sexual curiosity and its unthinking repression by parents and schoolteachers alike. Treated by the playwright with sympathy and humanity the youngsters in Wedekind's masterpiece go variously, and even fatally, adrift in a society too scared to allow feelings to rise to the surface. Wedekind's play provided the source material for the smash-hit Broadway musical of the same name.

Finally! This is an excellent translation of a very important play that has rocked the theatrical cradle since it was written. Highly recommendable.

Simply outstanding 30 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
this was a fantastic book. I'd only ever watched the musical and wanted to see how it started, before the music was added and I was exstreamly impressed.
this is the perfect book for any adolescent or anyone interested in drama. it is a moving book and a wonderful story.
If I had to give one critasisem with this book is that the sise (I'm talking about lenth and with) is verry verry small making the pages hard to turn, but we can't have every thing :)
I strongly advise anyone interested to by this book :)
