Product Description

Product Description

A guide to the lightweight container framework that presents an exciting alternative to EJB

J2EE offers Java developers a very powerful enterprise framework. But portions of J2EE can be complicated--specifically Enterprise JavaBeans. By shouldering the burden of J2EE's complexities and providing the developer with a much simple abstraction, Spring makes developing J2EE application significantly simpler. It also provides a viable alternative to EJB, providing many of the same features offered by EJB, but without EJB's complexities.

Written for enterprise Java developers who have become disillusioned with the complexity and bulk involved with EJB development, "Spring in Action" demonstrates how the Spring framework can make coupled code easy to manage, understand, reuse, and unit-test. Spring's employment of inversion control and aspect-oriented programming techniques to encourage loosely coupled code is explained, providing programmers with the ability to use JavaBeans with the power and enterprise services only previously available in the heavier Enterprise JavaBeans.

Even hard-core EJB fanatics may find some value in this book as the next specification of EJB will more closely resemble Spring than the current EJB specification. Software architects will find Spring in Action valuable in assessing and applying the lightweight techniques prescribed by Spring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference manual, 8 April 2005
"Spring In Action" is a really good book, which adopt a different approach from other books like "Spring Live" (Matt Raible, Sourcebeat): while the latter is more practical and simple, "Spring in Action" is a complete reference manual that covers nearly every aspect of Spring. This doesn't mean it is complicate: every explanation is clear and there are a lot of code examples.
I particularly appreciated its well-planned table of contents: the first part explains clearly what "Inversion of Control" and AOP mean and how Spring makes them possible. The second part is about "Spring in the business layer", explaining how you can write services and Daos, and how you can simply implement transaction management and service remoting. Finally, the third part talks about the Web layer covering Spring MVC as well as other technologies and frameworks. Furthermore, chapter 11 covers application security using Acegi.
The style is always simple and enjoyable, and the length (about 400 pages) allows you to read it in a few days. Overall an excellent resource for any developer interested in using Spring in his project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand and well written, 31 Dec 2005
By Vivek Viswanathan "vivek_v" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really liked the writing style, after reading the first few chapters explaning IoC, AoP and how it has been implemented in Spring you can then basically jump to any other chapter and read through. I also like the writing style used when introducing new topics/chapters.
Once you get this book, I wouldnt think you want any other book, since the concepts are explained quite well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Book, 15 Nov 2008

This review is from: Spring in Action (Paperback)
I have just started reading this book and I am impressed by the Authors writing style, examples and explanations. I hardly get impressed by a book on the first day. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning Spring and taking advantage of its rich features.
