essential reading for any fan. --Rock Sound

All band members and scenester notables are here. --Classic Rock

Product Description

They were the pioneers of American hardcore, forming in California in 1878 and splitting up 8 years later leaving behind them a trail of blood, carnage and brutal, brilliant music. Throughout the years they fought with the police, record industry and their own fans. This is the band's story from the inside, drawing upon exclusive interviews with the group's members, their contemporaries and the groups who were inspired by them. It's also the story of American hardcore music, from the perspective of the group who did more to take the sound to the clubs, squats and community halls in American than any other.

This was a great book, i am a die hard black flag fan so anything about black flag i will like really, but not just telling the full history of the band it went deeper into the relationships with the band members and sst staff. With an interview with chuck dukowski and refrences from other interviews with keith, ron, kira and henry it gives you a deeper look at how the band changed and a good background of the time. There were a few errors though dates wrong and a few other things but this dosnt't damage it at all.. The book gives you a greater understanding of the band if your a solid fan then get it!

"Spray paint the walls" is a well written story of a band that influenced many. Its highly detailed descriptions of places, people and relations lets us go deep into the 80's reality America, explore the music history, that influenced the group and embrace the reality that brought the members to form a crew. The book introduces wide backgrounds of each member of the group, basing on friend's interviews, gig reviews, photos, excerpts from local magazines and zines. The author tries not to take any side and describes the story as a phenomenon; perceives it from different sides and doesn't only see the top of the iceberg - meaning the latest relations between Ginn and Rollins.
A great story, written with the right dose of fascination, kept even-handed.

This is an excellent book for anyone with an interest in Hardcore or the West Coast scene: well written and never dull. It is also an excellent companion piece to Our Band Could Be Your Life. Having recently read books about The Fall and Wire, and ultimately becoming slightly disillusioned, I have to say that this is one of the best 'band' books I have read in a very long time.
