This is the third book in this series. To be honest I brought the first one as a gift for the grandchildren,(Two boys, aged 18 months and 5 years) as I have been following Jane's blog for years. My nursery school teacher daughter in law can't stop raving about these books. So now my grandchildren have the whole set.The photography is wonderful, Jane encourages the child to look at everyday objects in different ways, to see patterns, stripes, circles and spots everywhere they look. From the lines of Playmobile figures to wrought iron gates. If she just encourages one child to look at their surroundings, she will have done her job.
The one downside to this series is they are published by an American publisher, I have only found them on Amazon and no where else. They need to be in every school and library up and down the country.

Patterns Are Everywhere 5 Mar. 2012
By Jill H. - Published on
Format: Library Binding
"Spotty, Stripy, Swirly" goes into much detail about what a pattern is and what a pattern isn't, where you can find patterns, and how to notice patterns on items that are seen throughout the day. The reader will find many colorful photos related to patterns throughout the book.

I will probably never look at patterns the same now that I have read this book. Most likely I will be noticing them more often wherever I go. Our imaginations use patterns no matter what age we are, sometimes without even noticing we are using them.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I viewed this e-book free from the publisher through I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
A Pattern Primer for Pre-K 18 April 2012
By Sue Morris from Kid Lit Reviews - Published on
Format: Library Binding
Dotty, stripy, straight, and swirly--patterns are all around us. How many different patterns can you find pictured in this book?

Wow! For younger children this is a challenge right out of Where's Waldo? I am still counting as I write this. Wow! Flowers, furniture, toys, sidewalks, anything you might see have patterns. There are numerous patterns in Spotty, Stripy, Swirly: What are Patterns? Stripes, swirls, dots, circles, lines--the options are endless. But what is a pattern? This is the subject of this fascinatingly colorful book for kids.

I like Spotty, Stripy, Swirly. The story is the pattern. What is it? Where is it? Why is it? The author explains all of those W's. After reading this book, I will see patterns in places I had never noticed before. The author explains what constitutes a pattern and what does not. I found this little book interesting. Young children will love it for the colors and the patterns. For days, maybe forever, they will tell you about patterns they see.

This is the next step for pre-K children who have mastered basic shapes. They will need to understand shapes to understand Spotty, Stripy, Swirly. The colors and patterns will hold children's interest for hours. Once they know their 1,2,3's, kids can start the author's challenging question: How many different patterns can you find pictured in this book?

Great for Lessons on Patterns 10 Mar. 2012

Spotty, Stripy, Swirly: What Are Patterns? (Jane Brocket's Clever Concepts) is an excellent current resource for early elementary lessons on patterns. The pictures are clear, vibrant, and easily recognizable items visible in everyday life. It is an excellent attention grabber and starting place for the lesson, then classes could walk around identifying similar patterns, then making their own. Definitely a must buy for my early elementary library.

Good choice for homeschoolers 24 April 2012

Photo concept book similar to Tana Hoban's work. Photos of colorful patterns in tiles, textiles, food, nature, and building. Although the text is brief, usually one sentence per page, it packs in a lot of information on what makes a pattern from simple to complex. My only complaint is that there are four photo spreads of sugary treats. Be ready to hear "can I have that?" once the little ones see them. Ages 2-5

Your kids will like this book of photographs about patterns.
