Product Description

Product Description

With its fully adjustable eyepiece from 16x to 30x magnification, its compact dimensions and weighing in at just 660 grams the new MINOX MD 50 truly is a spotting scope to have with you at all times. Even with a 50 mm entrance pupil the MD 50 is very powerful and provides good bright images. For high light transmission as well as brilliance, high contrast and natural color rendition the high resolution objective lens system features the multi-layer M* coating which is a MINOX development. This helps to ensure the high quality required for detailed observation and reliable identification of a species. Go from just five meters from your subject right through to infinity. An angled scope provides a more relaxed stance during viewing and with a swivel tripod connection the telescope can be pivoted when on a tripod. The sturdy but lightweight body protects the precision mechanics and optics against damage in normal use. Rubber armoring ensures a good grip and provides added protection – it is also dustproof and watertight to a depth of five metres. Nitrogen filling on the inside prevents corrosion and fogging caused by condensation, even with extreme temperature fluctuations.

Lightweight but solidly built, this compact spotting scope is difficult to fault. For the price the optics are excellent, giving a clear undistorted image even at its highest magnification (x30). The zoom is smooth, and all in all it's a very comfortable and easy thing to use. The focus mechanism is quite stiff so it can be a bit of a strain on my old arthritic fingers on a cold day, and maybe would be a bit tricky for a child to operate. But given the overall quality of the 'scope this is a small gripe indeed.
OK, it's not top-end optics, but it's not top-end price either.
Image quality- four stars.
Build quality- five stars.
Value for money- five stars.

Very compact lightweight scope. Clear sharp images when focussed, but focus and zoom controls are quite stiff, so hopefully will ease off with time. Ideal to put in a rucksack for casual use but at 30x magnification and with 50mm object lens cannot match up to the larger spotting scopes with bigger magnification. Well made and good value, ideal for those who don't want to carry heavy equipment around. Comes with case which would have been better ready made with a hole to accommodate the mount for use on a tripod.

Whilst this is a tough little scope and very compact I find the optics disappointing with a regular colour fringing problem at most zoom settings.
I cannot recommend this product.

Quality Instrument 7 May 2010
By Hunt N. Peck - Published on Amazon.com

I debated long and hard about whether I wanted to spend $349 for this spotter, vs. $124 for a comparably sized Brunton Echo. Since I love German engineering, and because this scope offered an angled eyepiece (an important feature for me), I went with the Minox. My decison was validated the moment I removed it from the padded carrying case. The scope is hefty for its size. It has a wonderful solid feel to it and operation of the focus ring, power selector and extending rubber eyecup all convey a sense of quality and precision. The optics are bright, super clear, with excellent contrast -- what one would expect from lenses ground in Wetzlar. I see no distortion at any power and the scope can resolve small details at 100 yards with no difficulty. I was delighted to find that the scope also focused down to very close objects @ 10 feet distance. I mated it to a Slik Mini Pro V tripod and the two are an unbeatable combination. If you want a quality optical instrument in a convenient size, this is the scope for you. Bravo Minox!

Birder's Delight 30 May 2011
By Hernan C. Mapua - Published on Amazon.com

I bought the Minox for my wife, who is an avid birder. She's seen my sister's Zvarovski, but doesn' like it because of the weight. On long birding hikes in isolated country, there aren't any porters. The MD 50 is small and light, and waterproof. We have not tested the waterproofing, but the Minox comes through with flying colors in heavy rain. I was pleasantly surprised at the sharp, crisp and contrasty images at any magnification. To make a long story short, my wife loved it! My sister (the one with the Swarovsky) dropped by this afternoon, got to take a look at it and was impressed. Get the bigger models of the Minox, as you will outgrow this one in a hurry.

Excellent small, lightweight scope...reasonably rugged and good performance 20 Nov. 2014

I bought this scope to carry, along with a Dolica TX580B150SL ultra compact tripod, for those occasions where I didn't want to carry along a full sized scope and tripod. The scope fits the bill perfectly. I can easily throw the scope and tripod in a backpack or camera bag, or even airline carry on bags. The scope comes with a front lens cover, and a thimble shaped large cover that screws over the eyepiece for protection. There is a collar on the scope so that it can be rotated around the line of sight axis. The views are sharp and have little distortion/color problems. I'm really glad I added this to the "kit".

Nice 29 Nov. 2013

Good glass for the money. Clear even at 30 power. Can't touch my Swaro's for clarity of course, but they get the job done. Great addition to the pack, hardly bigger than my hand. Only complaint is the focus ring, pretty stiff to operate.
Very nice for the money and objective size 22 Oct. 2014

Very nice for the money and objective size. It is small and easy to take to the range and works great at 100 and well at 200 yards, which is what I bought it for. Long range needs bigger glass, which I have as well.
