More About the Author

Born in 1927, Eric Hill is the creator of Spot, 'the world's favourite puppy'. At 16 he joined an art studio, where he was encouraged to draw cartoons in his spare time. He particularly enjoyed drawing aircraft, and it was the markings of planes that later came to influence the design of Spot, reflected in the spots on his body and the tip of his tail. Eric also spent time in the air force, and worked in a large advertising agency as a graphic designer. In 1976 Eric's son Christopher was born and by the time he was two, Eric was making up stories about the adventures of a small puppy to read to him at bedtime and Spot was born!

The design of the books was inspired by an advertising flyer Eric had devised involving a flap covering an amusing picture. When Eric showed this to Christopher he saw how responsive he was to the idea and incorporated it into his book. Although initially created just as a story to please his son, Where's Spot? was actually published as a children's book in 1980 and started a new publishing concept of 'interactive books for babies'.

Eric Hill was awarded an OBE for services to Children's Literature in 2008.

4.0 out of 5 stars my sons favorite book! 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
What a wonderful book! At 9 months old my son spotted this book on a book store floor waiting to be reshelved and suddenly started screaming and pointing at it and has never looked back since! This book is a truly interactive experience with precise sounds and wonderfully bright colours - ideal first read. The books structure is virtually timeless with your child bringing his own variations as he gets older. The on-page commands for pressing the buttons are very clear and provides years of fun as it is quite strudy. My advice would be to buy this now as this trully interactive experience is completely precious and will have your child running around after you shouting "ook!" "ook!" everyday!Happy reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but 2 minor disappointments 8 Sep 2008
Format:Hardcover
The book is great. My son enjoys it. The problem I have with it is that the pages are not board pages but soft pages. At his age (14 months) he is liable to tear the pages long before he gets any mileage out of the book. The sounds are wonderful and he is fascinated by them. The dog picture (of Spot) should have barked like a dog. That's how children learn. In this book the picture of spot has a laughing sound to it which is funny but doesn't teach the child the sound of a dog.

“Spot's Noisy Walk (Play-a-sound)” by Eric Hill is a great book for toddlers which teach them some simple and interesting sounds they will love.

The author tells amusing story about our famous hero Spot who together with his best friend goes to the village and meets many interesting animals while experiencing exciting adventures.

The book comes with 16 sounds buttons, which convincingly imitate animals and other sounds around Spot like throwing ball or drinking juice.

My little girl flipped through it a hundred times, but still enjoy a lot when we read it together while she is pressing the sound buttons.

Therefore, it can certainly be recommended to anyone with small children who want to slowly introduce them to the exciting world of picture books and reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice spot story but not the best interactive 3 Jan 2009
By Dooby
Format:Hardcover
My sons 2 and 4 enjoy this story. Theres plenty to keep them giggling and interested. My only problem with it is when you're reading the story the picture boxes at the top of the page indicate which noise you need to press for that particular page. We have a better spot interactive book 'spots noisy night' where the boxes are actually placed within the text indicating when they come into the story ... with this book you have to work it out for yourselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPOT LAUGHS - OUT LOUD!! 6 Dec 2000

.
The great Eric Hill SPOT machine keeps churning them out. At last count there were 168 titles on Amazon.com's list, including stories in 5 languages.
Sadly this title is currently out of print. It deserves to get back in the catalogs since it's one of Eric's best. The use of "Play-a-Sound" technology and its large format make it the perfect entertainment medium for young children.
There are 16 different sounds ranging from an alarm clock to farm animals and a fantastic splash.
The story prompts the child to press the picture/button with the appropriate sound. This simple form of interactive storytelling / story making is very engaging and will appeal to all children.
WARNING: Don't leave this book on the floor. A walk in the dark could generate a rooster's crow long before sunrise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous - and back? 23 May 2004

If it's out of print, the printed lots because it's still around four years later. My mother just gave my son a copy weeks ago, and he loves it. The writing isn't as good as Sandra Boynton, for example, and the illustrations are so-so, but the 16 sounds are nice, and integrate well with the story. Plus, he's happy to sit in the middle of our bed pressing buttons and giggling while I brush my teeth or some other mundane task that's easier without a baby in your arms.
