More About the Author

Born in 1927, Eric Hill is the creator of Spot, 'the world's favourite puppy'. At 16 he joined an art studio, where he was encouraged to draw cartoons in his spare time. He particularly enjoyed drawing aircraft, and it was the markings of planes that later came to influence the design of Spot, reflected in the spots on his body and the tip of his tail. Eric also spent time in the air force, and worked in a large advertising agency as a graphic designer. In 1976 Eric's son Christopher was born and by the time he was two, Eric was making up stories about the adventures of a small puppy to read to him at bedtime and Spot was born!

The design of the books was inspired by an advertising flyer Eric had devised involving a flap covering an amusing picture. When Eric showed this to Christopher he saw how responsive he was to the idea and incorporated it into his book. Although initially created just as a story to please his son, Where's Spot? was actually published as a children's book in 1980 and started a new publishing concept of 'interactive books for babies'.

Eric Hill was awarded an OBE for services to Children's Literature in 2008.

About the Author

Eric Hill was born in North London in 1927 and, apart from a brief period of evacuation, lived there for many years. His career as an artist began when he was employed as a messenger in an art studio and was encouraged to draw. Eric's son was born in 1976 and he began to write stories about a puppy to read to him at bedtime, and so Spot was born. The family moved to California in 1983 but Eric continues to visit the UK several times a year and is very involved in developing Spot projects.

My mother-in-law bought this for my daughter when she was 3 and it was money well spent. Somehow Spot grabs a young childs attention like almost no other character. She loves this book, especially the flaps, which like all spot books are tough enough to withstand some serious pulling!

My 18m old son loves lift-the-flap books and also Spot so we bought this for him to get him ready for his 2nd Christmas. I think we read this every single day in December and he never got bored. He still brings it to me now (in April) to read and considering those flaps have been lifted many, many times, they have lasted quite well.

A delightful book for young children for Christmastime. The two copies were bought as gifts for children aged one year and the other for a two year old. They loved Spot and followed the stories and lifted the lids on the pages and understood the story and responded appropriately to the reader !
More Spot books have been purchased since this volume and there are many more introducing different aspects of their experience.

My toddler (2yrs) is a fan of all spot the dog books to be honest, so no suprises that he loved this also. Although still not fully aware of the whole 'Christmas' thing he likes pointing out Santa and presents. Lift the Flap books never fail to get his attention, no matter what the story!

Another great Spot book. My little boy turns 3 soon and loves the Spot (lift-the-flap) books. I wanted a book to introduce him to Christmas now he's at an age he can begin to understand and this book didn't disappoint. Simple and not too complicated for a little one.

Such fond memories of this classic book, I bought this for 6 small children this Christmas. I think their parents have ha more fun reading this than the kids, but it is bound to keep everyone happy and it brilliant to bring out every year near Christmas time.
