More About the Author

Born in 1927, Eric Hill is the creator of Spot, 'the world's favourite puppy'. At 16 he joined an art studio, where he was encouraged to draw cartoons in his spare time. He particularly enjoyed drawing aircraft, and it was the markings of planes that later came to influence the design of Spot, reflected in the spots on his body and the tip of his tail. Eric also spent time in the air force, and worked in a large advertising agency as a graphic designer. In 1976 Eric's son Christopher was born and by the time he was two, Eric was making up stories about the adventures of a small puppy to read to him at bedtime and Spot was born!

The design of the books was inspired by an advertising flyer Eric had devised involving a flap covering an amusing picture. When Eric showed this to Christopher he saw how responsive he was to the idea and incorporated it into his book. Although initially created just as a story to please his son, Where's Spot? was actually published as a children's book in 1980 and started a new publishing concept of 'interactive books for babies'.

Eric Hill was awarded an OBE for services to Children's Literature in 2008.

About the Author

Eric Hill was born in North London and lived there for many years. He started his artistic career as an art studio messenger and from there went on to become a cartoonist and eventually an art director at a leading advertising agency. In 1978 Eric made up a story about a small puppy to read to his son at bedtime and Spot was born. from Eric Hill.

This review is for the PUFFIN paperback, lift-the-flap version/1991.

22 thick, shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Large bold, easy-to-follow text and 9 sturdy flaps ensure successful lifting/replacing, time and time again.
Colourfully illustrated throughout.

In this story, Spot has a nice surprise - a brand new baby sister, called `Susie'.
Spot gets a special present, too.
Helen and Tom arrive to meet the new arrival and play. Spot gets a toy for his new playmate to play with but Susie is rather taken with something else and scampers off with it.......and generally behaves like little sisters do..... Spot is very forgiving!

Delightful book, further enhanced by the endearing expressions and the occasional `helpful' comment from the characters hidden behind the flaps!

From the back cover:-

'SPOT is one of the essential experiences of childhood' - Parent Magazine.'

One of the best series of books for early readers!

My 2 year old son loves this book and has been choosing to read it a lot in advance of the arrival of his own baby sister. I am interested to know, though, whether my son is expecting a dog to be joining the family, or a new baby!

My son loves this range of books. really nice to touch and feel for a 2 year old. He loves opening the flaps and looking inside.
Nicely written and very well presented for a 2-3yr old. Very pleased.
