More About the Author

Born in 1927, Eric Hill is the creator of Spot, 'the world's favourite puppy'. At 16 he joined an art studio, where he was encouraged to draw cartoons in his spare time. He particularly enjoyed drawing aircraft, and it was the markings of planes that later came to influence the design of Spot, reflected in the spots on his body and the tip of his tail. Eric also spent time in the air force, and worked in a large advertising agency as a graphic designer. In 1976 Eric's son Christopher was born and by the time he was two, Eric was making up stories about the adventures of a small puppy to read to him at bedtime and Spot was born!

The design of the books was inspired by an advertising flyer Eric had devised involving a flap covering an amusing picture. When Eric showed this to Christopher he saw how responsive he was to the idea and incorporated it into his book. Although initially created just as a story to please his son, Where's Spot? was actually published as a children's book in 1980 and started a new publishing concept of 'interactive books for babies'.

Eric Hill was awarded an OBE for services to Children's Literature in 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 26 Mar 2009
Format:Board book
My 15 month old daughter loves this book. The flaps get tatty but it doesn't matter. It is pulled out when a diversion is needed usually when acting up in public. A lovely little story - highly recommended.

Format:Paperback
This review is for the PUFFIN paperback, lift-the-flap version/1994.

22 thick, shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Large, bold, easy-to-follow text on one page and a picture and a lift-the flap opportunity on the other.
9 sturdy flaps ensure successful lifting/replacing time and time again.
Colourfully illustrated throughout.

In this story, it is Dad's (Sam) - birthday, on Friday, and Spot wants to bake a cake with Mum (Sally).
First they need to go shopping. Then they do the baking, which gets a little messy, when Spot gets a bit carried away!

From the back cover:-

'SPOT is one of the essential experiences of childhood' - Parent Magazine.'

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Spot Bakes a Cake' lift the flap book 28 Jun 2009
Format:Board book
Another in the classic 'Spot' series. My daughter has asked again and again for me to read this book with her, as Spot gets covered in chocolate, whilst making a cake for his Dad's birthday. The book is also strong enough for me to leave it with her to explore - usually upside down!

Chunky, simple, colourful and engaging for small children. Have bought quite a few of these. Suitable to read to toddlers and for young primary school children to read aloud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Provides great entertainment for my 3 year old 23 Aug 2013
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
My three year old loves baking and got so into this book that he ripped one of the flaps off! The book is hard pages and durable but the flaps aren't, so would recommend for 3 years and above only.
