Review

'Highly respected nutritionist Anita Bean cuts through all the jargon... a book no serious athlete should be without.' Athletics Weekly (Jan 2008) 'This kit bag-sized book by Anita Bean is a valuable reference tool for those interested in supplements and nutrition. Easy to read and packed with concise information, it'll help you understand the massive range of supplements on the market.' 220 Triathlon (March 2008) 'The section on what to eat before, during and after exercise is excellent' *** Women's Fitness (April 2008)

Product Description

Bestselling author Anita Bean tackles nutritional supplements in this easy-to-read guide for anyone interested in optimising their training programme. There are a huge variety of sports supplements on the market, from pills and powders to drinks and bars. They claim to increase muscle tissue, improve endurance, promote fat burning or improve strength, but many are also banned in sport, for example ephedrine, which could result in a positive drugs test. Others, such as creatine are widely used and not banned, but still need to be used with caution. Sifting through the multitude of products can be an overwhelming task, especially in light of persuasive advertising campaigns. Scientific research may be exaggerated, or used selectively by manufacturers. Anita cuts through the hype and does the research for you, supplying you all with the right information to make an informed decision, based on your needs as an athlete.

Mrs Bean has here produced a handy little book in which she takes us through the most common supplements on the market. It even touches Pro hormones, ephedrine and other supplements which my not be legal to purchase in every country, however as often are encountered in gyms across the world.

Make no mistake, this is no Bible in nutrition but the reader certainly get a feeling of an increased "know how" and by all means is better equipped to make their selections of supplements that "may help" them on the way after this read.

A very big credit as well for references to actual research for many of the products.

I very much believe that, unless you are a nutritionist or advanced athlete, there is something to learn here for many of us, easy it is to understand and read and little do you pay for it.

Useful reference 2 Feb 2008
By John Boy TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Anita Bean provides clear information and, although there are references to scientific papers, this isn't an arid text book. It covers a variety of supplements that may be suitable for endurance and explosive sports, as well as for weight training. It would have been useful to have commented on:
* Coenzyme Q10 and its effect on mitacondria in aerobic exercise;
* reports that CLA can increase oxidative stress in endurance athletes;
* whether vitamin C reduces endurance and post-exercise muscle
adaption.
Nevertheless, it is a useful book to judge whether certain supplements are likely to promote recovery or increase performance.
