Product Description

Synopsis

Horses, like humans athletes, can suffer from muscular stiffness, strains and injuries, all of which can benefit from well-applied sports massage. Using simple massage techniques - namely, compressions and cross-fibre friction - Pennie explains that it's not difficult to give your horse a basic sports massage, given a little practice. She explains how to recognise problems, through observing your horse on the move and by using your hands on his body. Clear diagrams and photos show where and how to apply the massage techniques to aid specific problems. As a preventative treatment against muscle problems, Sports massage is second to none. Moreover, most horses really enjoy a good massage, just as we do, making them feel better and move more freely as a result.

First Sentence
By nature, horses are flight animals, designed to evade predators and move swiftly at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour; their eyes are set at the sides of their head, facilitating almost 360-degree vision; they can sleep standing up; and by grazing and moving in herds they benefit from sharing many eyes and ears, constantly alert to danger. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars sports massage for horses by pennie hooper, 30 July 2009

This review is from: Sports Massage for Horses (Hardcover)
My horse had a sports massage by Pennie whilst we were on a Ride with Your Mind course with Mary Wanless. It was really good and beneficial to the horse. He really enjoyed it. So I ordered the book. It is clear, easy to follow and the way that it compares the horses muscles with our own muscles gives a real insight to what is actually happening when these muscles are tight. A really good buy, I'd recommend it to everybody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supple horses alround., 25 July 2010
This review is from: Sports Massage for Horses (Hardcover)
At first, I read this book and went 'woo lets give it a go' then i went 'but what if i hurt her?'
I read the book again and it dawned on me that as long as you do not apply excessive pressure then no harm can be done.
I trouped up the yard, book in hand and give it my best shot. With the help of the discriptive text and enlightening, clear photographs I managed to complete my first full massage. I then made the decision to concerntrate on cate's neck, poll and shoulders and within a matter of days I saw a huge improvement in Cate's movement, and in the muscle on both the neck and the back. Something was certainly working.

I have now moved on to a more indepth book on equine manipulation and massage, but I would recommend this book to anyone who has a keen interest in improve the welfare of horses throught a non invasive therepy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, 12 Sep 2010
This review is from: Sports Massage for Horses (Hardcover)
Having met Pennie 10 or so years ago through a mutual client it was immediately clear how much the horses appreciated the work that she did to them. She often spoke of the book that she wanted to write to help owners help their own horses, and now that she has achieved that it is wonderful as a horse owner to be able to use her knowledge to treat my horse. The book is carefully written, easily interpreted; and practised. Well done Pennie.
