The early 1970s saw a golden era when Porsche's flat-12 917 dominated, challenged from time to time by Ferrari 512S and Alfa Romeo T33/3 rivals.Into 1972, Ferrari's open-top 312PB came good, and in 1973 the Mirage M6 and Matra-Simca MS670 won races too.The 1973 season saw the last running of the Targa Florio on the classic 44-mile Sicilian circuit, and Ferrari's formal withdrawal from sports car racing. For 1976, a new Group 5 or 'Silhouette' formula was added alongside Group 6: Porsche dominated both categories with occasional interventions by BMW and Alpine-Renault.Alfa Romeo ruled the 1977 season, winning every race. For 1978-79, the Porsche 935 was the weapon of choice, but new rivals appeared at the close of the decade.Besides the Porsche 935, race winners in 1980 were Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, De Cadenet LM, Rondeau M379B (on home soil at Le Mans) and Osella PA8.
