Product Description

Product Description

This is a collection of informatively captioned photographs detailing the birth and development of Alfa Romeo saloon cars. Noted for their sporting handling and strong performance, employing the same suspension and running gear as GTs and sports cars, Alfa Romeo saloons have always proved popular. Indeed, back in the 1950s and 1960s, they were perceived as the benchmark sports saloons and set the pace long before the arrival of such other sporting models as those from the BMW 3-series. Alfa saloons were regarded by their owners as being as equally charismatic as their higher profile siblings and therefore earned the marque widespread recognition beyond the world of motorsport. This book follows the story of Alfa Romeo from the early days of production in 1910, through a multitude of racing successes, to the company's emergence as a builder of world-class sports and touring machines in the 1950s. John Tipler explores the development of the four-door saloon cars during the 1950s and 60s, from the 1900 Giulietta, Giulia TI and Super Berlinas to the Alfetta and Alfasud saloons of the 1970s and the 33 and 75 models of the 1980s. The author also describes the new generation of cars which emerged in the 1990s, including the striking 156 that instantly gained the coveted Car of the Year Award.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Alfas but all photos in b&w, 26 Jan 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alfa Romeo Sporting Saloons (Sutton's Photographic History of Transport) (Paperback)
Not a bad book, it gives the reader an interesting overview of all the Alfas over the years. However, all the photos are in black and white which is a real shame as there are some lovely photos in this book. If this book was reprinted with colour photos, then I couldnt recommend it more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Essentially an under-sized coffee table book., 21 Sep 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Alfa Romeo Sporting Saloons (Sutton's Photographic History of Transport) (Paperback)
Essentially an under-sized coffee table book whose content, contrary to the title, spends an equal amount of time on coupes. The majority of text is taken up by an obligatory history in the beginning and is largely made up of picture bylines. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book., 2 Feb 2011
By Mr. Einstein - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Alfa Romeo Sporting Saloons (Sutton's Photographic History of Transport) (Paperback)
Contrary to "A Customers" review above, I'm highly impressed with this book. Why? First of all, the author is just a wealth of information on all things Alfa Romeo. You'll learn a lot about the brand and its cars from reading this book. Second, the quality of the photographs, paper, and binding are very high. Especially the photographs. I don't know where he got them all, but most I've never seen before, and I've read over a dozen Alfa Romeo books. Sure there's a lot in the book about coupes, but so what? To an Alfisti, that's a good thing. The more the better. This book's a keeper. Get it while you can.
