Using archival books and artifacts, original records and documents, and media material, the author makes a contribution to the feminist study of sport from the 19th century to the present day. She examines theoretical ideas, historical material and topical issues and in doing so reveals the complex and paradoxical character of female sport. Attention is given to both gender and class relations, as well as other aspects of life and culture which are intrinsic to the development of female sport. This comprehensive book won North American Sociology of Sports book award in 1994. Jennifer Hargreaves writes this book using both a historical and sociological perspective in analysing womens sport. The book puts women and their sporting experiences at the forefront of importance. This is by the far the most comprehensive book on women and sport that there is it is excellent. Well written in a sensitive and easy to read manner. Any student interested in feminism or in sport, including athletes themselves will learn much from this book. The book looks at perspectives that have been used in the sociology of sport, policy and planning of women's sport including an comprehensive review of governments sports for all campaigns. Well written and accessible to all.
