2.0 out of 5 stars Short and shallow 14 Mar. 2013

This is too short and I feel doesn't go in-depth enough. A better book on this subject in my opinion is 10 minute toughness by Jason sell.

A great insight into sport psychology. It provides specific detail that is easy to understand and follow, which enables you to relate it to your own sporting environment.
The way the content is structured, anyone who is involved in sport, whether its for participation or performance purposes, you can really take something from this book.
Being a former Professional Football player and now a professional coach you do not relise the importance 'Sport Psychology' has on personal development.
This book underpinns this and is a great resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All Athletes 23 Feb. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a must-read for accomplished and amateur athletes looking to enhance overall performance.

Although it is aimed at MMA fighters, I believe the principles are relevant to all athletes. The book's introduction explains that the psychological aspect of training is one of the 4 corners of sports performance, and working on this is every bit as important as the athlete's physical training.

Written by a sports psychologist with over 10 years experience, this book is clear, concise, and very informative. The author sets out the goals of each chapter, clearly explaining which qualities each aspect will help to improve in the athlete.

Some of the skills the book seeks to enhance are concentration, motivation, confidence, determination, stress relief, and preparation for competition.

The opening chapters look at self-assessment and goal setting. The text moves on to discuss the benefits of self-talking and using imagery and music to enhance performance. There is also a discussion of pre-performance routines, in which the author explains very well how the body and mind can be trained to work together. I found this particularly helpful. The book then offers tips on how to psyche oneself up for a competitive event - and down, when the competition is over. There is a chapter dedicated to post-performance evaluation, with advice on how to continually re-adjust one's training and competitive goals. There are also some excellent tips and exercises for dealing with injury, which all athletes will find pertinent. Finally, there is an interview with professional MMA fighter, Rosi Sexton.

The text is organised into a logical order, taking the reader through all stages of competition preparation, from the start of training to after the competition.
