Review

"Definitive... Hallwas' reading of 'Spoon River' is undoubtedly the best and the one the poet intended. The Midwest is seens as the New World Eden assaulted by the forces of modernization." -- Chicago Tribune. "Massively annotated... provides a wealth of information." -- The New Republic --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Author

A funeral is often the starting point of a novel or film, where the black-clothed mourners, the tolling bell, the minister’s valediction, all set the scene for revelations to come. Edgar Lee Masters takes this an imaginative step further. What a brilliant story-telling device is his method of letting the dead speak for themselves and in doing so create the portrait of a community. It is one any novelist burdened with the minutiae of narrative, the getting characters from A to B and year to year, might envy. There is material for many novels in the 214 free-verse monologues, the tiny autobiographies, which form the text. To take as a model Mackail’s ‘Select Epigrams from the Greek Anthology’ was an inspiration; as Martin Seymour-Smith has said, the work "acted as the catalyst required to manufacture the acid of his genius, compounded of an innate bitterness, a passion for the truth, and a rare sympathy for human beings." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read, Consider and Enjoy! 26 Oct 2011
By James Gallen TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
I had read "Spoon River Anthology" in high school many years ago and decided to revisit it to refresh the fading memory. I was not disappointed. This work by Edgar Lee Masters consists of reflections, accusations, confessions and general commentaries from the graves of late citizens of Spoon River. The actual river, and mythical setting of the town, is in Central Illinois' Lincoln Country. These snippets provide humor, wisdom, insight and a sense that human nature has not changed much over the years. Read, consider and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars American masterwork 10 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Robert Frost was easily one of the most overrated poets ever (his work is quite embarrassing). Spoon River Anthology, on the other hand, is a great American work, and a priceless portrait of American living at the time. The other review is completely misleading. Anyone who cares about seminal writing on American life should own this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a delight! 15 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
What a delightful 113 pages of voices from the past. Two hundred and fourteen voices, no less. Each one a delight, do go and get this little volume
which will introduce Edgar Lee Masters. This is a volume for sheer verbal pleasure . . .
