Book Description

‘It’s a dangerous job, but someone has to do it.’

For years, the local Spook kept the county safe from evil. But now his time has ended, and there is only one boy who can take over – Thomas Ward, barely more than a child himself. Now he too must take on an apprentice, a girl called Jenny who is untested but willing to be trained in the dangerous life of a Spook.

When girls start dying in mysterious circumstances, they soon find themselves on the path of a terrifying and deadly beast. Monstrous assassins are loose in the County, and far to the north, a new darkness is rising that threatens to engulf the whole world. Do Tom and Jenny stand a chance against the might of the Kobalos?

The first terrifying tale in the Starblade Chronicles, from the bestselling author of The Spook’s Apprentice

More About the Author

Joseph Delaney is a retired English teacher living in Lancashire. He has three children and seven grandchildren and is a wonderful public speaker available for conference, library and bookshop events. His home is in the middle of Boggart territory and his village has a boggart called the Hall Knocker, which was laid to rest under the step of a house near the church. Most of the places in the Spook's books are based on real places in Lancashire. And the inspiration behind the stories often comes from local ghost stories and legends. The Spook's Apprentice, The Spook's Curse and The Spook's Secret have all been shortlisted for the Lancashire children's Book for the Year Award. The Spook's Apprentice is the winner of both the Sefton Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award.

4.0 out of 5 stars The start of a new era 27 Jun. 2014
Having been a fan of the Wardstone series since they were first published, and having read all of them, I was eagerly waiting for the publication of A NEW DARKNESS. However, with 13 books before this one, I did wonder how successful the new book would be. I shouldn't have worried.

Although you don't necessarily have to read the previous books before reading A NEW DARKNESS, you will possibly enjoy it more if you have read them. A lot of the characters that appear, or are referred to, in this new book also appear in the previous work. This means that in order to fully understand relationships and previous battles, you need to have read the other books. However, for someone staring with this new series, Delaney provides enough information to explain relationships and conflicts on a surface level. As the title suggests, there is also a new threat to the County that Tom, as the Spook, has to face.

For anyone who has not read books by Delaney before, Tom Ward is a Spook. This means that he is paid by people to get rid of ghosts, ghasts, witches and boggarts. He is their defence against the dark. Tom's world is not all about clthearly defined good and bad though. Some of Delaney's characters manage to blur these boundaries, making you question who is friend, foe or a mixture of both. Despite being for younger readers, they are incredibly intelligently written, taking many themes into account.

If you have not read any books by Delaney before, I would strongly recommend you starting right at the beginning, THE SPOOK'S APPRENTICE. However, you can easily start here and enjoy it without needing to visit those previous works.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Era, same story. 6 April 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A new era begins and it is done in the way only Joseph Delaney can paint it. I have read the books from day one, Joseph Delaney is an exceptional author, I love his work and I enjoyed this but................. it merely carries on the Wardstone Chronicles with Tom replacing John Gregory as The Spook in Chippenden. I believe the Wardstone Chronicles needed an end and although that is what happened it does not feel like it. This is a return to more of the same. I love the story but I do wonder how far it can go. Delaney fans will love it, for me I think an end has to come.

This book can be read independently of the the first series, but you will get much more out of the story if have read them.

If this is the first 'Spooks' book you're thinking of reading, people and places are referred to and explained for the uninitiated reader, but this "should" only make you want to read the 1st batch.

Would highly recommend, I really enjoyed it. Although now I've completely caught up i'm frustrated that I can't just pick up the next one! Lol

It's just ok, not a fan of the ending and it felt very short and dragged out. But aside from that, it's good to be back in that world again and it is a decent start to a new series.
