Living in the dingy home of a typical witch is a small, black dog named 'Spook'. His unhappiness echoes the readers unrest at his dilemma. The witch is unfortunately allergic to cats, and has to resort to housing a dog as her familiar. The reader becomes mortified at the little dog losing his grip on the broomstick but soon realises that help is at hand in the shape of a little boy. One feels the relationship between the dog and the boy is profound right from their first meeting. The ensuing plot develops in such a way that the childlike reader cannot put it down until they know that dog and boy can be together. A perfect short read and a story that will remain a favourite through to adulthood, as it has for me.
