Biography

Calexico is no stranger to negotiating borders. For the better part of two decades, eight albums, and countless trips around the globe, Joey Burns and John Convertino have crossed musical barriers with their band, embracing a multitude of diverse styles, variety in instrumentation, and well-cultivated signature sounds. Under fences it digs and over mountains it climbs, sometimes into untrodden ... Read more in Amazon's Calexico Store

For anyone who is already a fan of Calexico, this album is a must. For anyone who hasn't heard of them before, read on.
Imagine taking some of the best elements of ambience of Velvet Underground, mixing in the soundtrack to a Fistful of Dollars while sitting in a cafe in Paris watching a street performer on accordion, and you start to get the general feel of this group.
Every track is undersold, with sublime understated vocals. This album is particularly atmospheric and slightly more downbeat than some of their other albums.
It doesn't quite measure up to Hot Rail (a complete 5 star classic in my book), but it has a different feel to it, so the comparison may not be fair.
If you like something out of the ordinary, buy it. If you are a Calexico fan, what are you reading this for, just buy it!

Strangely addictive 17 Nov. 2000
By Dana Sixty - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have to agree with all of these reviewers, save for the one who didn't like this release. This is a beautiful concoction of thoughtful-western-meets-tearful-traditional-Mexican beauties, worth listening to repeatedly. It doesn't jump out at you, but lures you in gently like a curious whisper. Everyone I played this CD for loved it and promptly went out to buy it. I suggest you do the same.

Great for driving through the desert at night 29 Nov. 2000

This IS Calexico's first album, Philip W. Black Light (their 2nd release) is a great album, but I prefer the lo-fi charm of the more soft-spoken tunes that make 'Spoke' Calexico's best album.

different...but the same. 22 Mar. 2004
By Chris Whitehead - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is not the lush cinematic Calexico of the other albums, This is much more folksier and gritty, and for that it stands alone in its sound. The framework is there for what would come later but there is no pedal steel or horns. All in all it is great, and Id also suggest Commited soundtrack or the Road Map cd from the bands website for a similar sound.

It's really an experimental thing 29 Dec. 2005
By JG - Published on Amazon.com

I had the good fortune of seeing Calexico live recently, and they put on quite a good show. I've been a casual fan for a while but bought this CD after the Iron & Wine collaboration, which is really good.

Here, they've put together a lot of found sounds, different ideas, and a hodgepodge of what they're into. The root is a southwest sound, but they really manage to go all over the board.

After listening to it a few times, it gives you the sense of a band in search of something, maybe its own sound, but they don't quite get there on this album.

These guys are experienced and great songwriters, and put on a great live show, but I'm waiting for thier masterpiece, which is going to come one of these days.
not typical...better 28 Mar. 2014
By John D. Gerndt - Published on Amazon.com

This disc holds experimental riffs and ditties all of which are recognizable as Calexico but that would not fit into any other format. It is a great look into their creative process, great for background not for sit and listen though some things will pull you out of your concentration for their unusual construction :-)
