By Dr. H. A. Jones TOP 500 REVIEWER on 11 April 2013
Chamber music most often involves three or four players in Trios or Quartets arranged for various instruments, but usually strings with or without piano. Chamber works for larger groups of instruments are relatively rare, though there are notable examples - and there are two such works on this CD of Spohr's Octet and Nonet scored for a combination of strings and wind. Though Spohr is rarely heard in the concert-hall these days, these are both quite delightful works that deserve much greater exposure. The playing by members of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields on the Philips label is quite delightful. The only comparable recording of this pair of works that I know well, and equally well played, is by the Gaudier Ensemble for Hyperion Records.
