Product Description

Product Description

The blue willow pattern is probably the best-known of all designs on pottery and porcelain. It has given rise to a number of odd ideas about its origins. The author of this book has drawn on previously unpublished sources, particularly from the archives of the Spode Company, to give a detailed account of the introduction of the pattern by Josiah Spode. The willow pattern was, however, only one of the many chinoiserie designs produced in Staffordshire and elsewhere at the turn of the century. This book analyzes and discusses willow pattern and its immediate precursors, such as Mandarin and Rock. Many examples of these and other designs are illustrated here for the first time. This guide should be a useful reference for specialist collectors, museums, dealers and potters.

Best in Breed. 26 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
I own ten books on blue and white so I might be considered a reasonable judge. With few exceptions this comes close to being the perfect format for a reference book.
One of the best features of the book is in the second half of the title; not just willow pattern. In fact the chapter is only twelve pages out of one hundred and eighty. The two temples, buffalo and rock patterns get nearly as much coverage.
I do not like the numbering of the illustrations for each chapter starting again at one, especially when a nunber one of a previous chapter is placed at the start of the new chapter.
But one great strength of this book is in the middle and on the inside of the dust jacket. A coloured strip of the various shades of blue employed by the company. I wish every book on blue and white had such a strip so you could tell whether the printing was bad or the colour of the blue was actually pale. Mandarin being the palest and midnight the darkest and the names of the six colours inbetween was like a revelation and I was really impressed by it.
A good selection of items with a text and chapter notes written by what would have to be one of the best sources make this an essential book for the collector.

A Must for Willow Collectors 21 April 2009
By Nash Black - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
When you attend a show, visit a flea market, or browse an antique store you will see customers reach for examples of willow patterned china. You will hear the comment, "Oh, my grandmother had this pattern."
For many this begins the life long joy of collecting willow pattern china. Mr. Robert Copeland, a former president and now member of the board for the Spode Company has made two visits to the yearly meeting of the International Willow Collectors Society. His visits have always been fountains of information about this beloved pattern and other patterns of oriental design.
SPODE'S WILLOW PATTERN is a must have volume for any collector whose love or interests tend to the oriental. Authors also use the information, so far a mention of willow has occurred in each of our mysteries.
