Product Description

When something distracts Secret Service agent Sean King for a split second, it costs him his career - and presidential candidate Clyde Ritter his life. What stole his attention? Why was Ritter shot? Where were the other detail leaders?

Eight years later, Michelle Maxwell is on the fast track through the ranks of the Secret Service when her career receives a lethal blow: presidential candidate John Bruno is abducted from a funeral home while under her protection. The similarity between the two cases drives Michelle to re-open investigations into the Ritter fiasco and join forces with attractive ex-agent King. The pair are determined to get to the bottom of what happened in those critical moments.

Meanwhile, high-ranking members of the legal system and key witnesses from both cases are going missing. King is losing friends, colleagues, and clients fast, and his ex-lover, Joan Dillinger, a hard-biting, widely respected agent, is playing curious games. She wants Sean back and resents his growing relationship with Michelle, but she also owes him for something.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book with is large cast of characters, convoluted twists and false leads.

I also liked the interaction between the three secret agents, Saen, Michelle and Joan. Baldacci does his usual fine job creating believable characters and engaging them in challenging situations.

This is not a seat of the pants, page turning, read, but it is a well constructed criminal investigation novel that grips the interest and keeps you reading.

That is until the finale begins on page 364, and then we are thrown into something so bizarre, so totally unbelievable; then the novel degenerates into endless pages of explanatory dialogue that completely destroys the tension and drama.

Even so I expect all Baldacci fans will want to read this, it is only the end that disappoints.

Split Second 23 Feb 2004
Format:Hardcover
This book is a terrible disappointment. I'm a great Baldacci fan and all all his previous books have been outstanding entertainment. But Split Second doesn't work, through a combination of lazy plotting and cardboard characters. The plot revolves around three supposedly intelligent and well-trained ex-Secret Service agents, who bumble and stumble thriough the book like Keystone Cops. The bad guys have no difficulty in bamboozling them, running rings aroound them, beating them up, even kidnapping them.Half way through, I lost all interest in the plot's tired convolutions; three-quarters way through, I gave up on it. Baldacci is capable of much, much better. What's going wrong? All my favourite writers (Clancy, Crichton, Baldacci, Grisham) have produced duds with their latest books.

This was the third book I have read by David Baldacci. I found it difficult to get into at the beginning, interesting in the middle and then frustrating towards the end. Overall I'd say it was a good read (have read a lot worse), but the other books I have read by this author were much better. Thought it was a bit of a spin off of Absolute Power. Regardless it will not stop me reading other books by him.

Split Second Review
This book is one of the best reads I've had for ages, suspense all the way, great car chase, and no idea who the killer is until its revealed near the end.

Spoiled by over-complicated ending
Generally a pretty good thriller involving a complex plot of murders over several years. Characters better than average and a generally involving read. Read more

I felt middle-aged reading this book
This was my first David Baldacci. The style, characters and plot are very formulaic (though that doesn't have to be bad). Read more

Another Winner for David Baldacci, A Stunning Book
