A lot of instrumental guitar albums tend to be self indulgent, with songs that sound too similar, but this one by Purple guitarist Steve Morse is not either of these things. Steve's technical prowess is obviously to the fore but you never feel that he is just trying to show off; electric guitar numbers are balanced with acoustic songs such as 'Back Porch' and Steve's bluegrass influences are an integral part of the sound here. He is clearly trying something different on the evocative 'Clear Memories', whilst the track 'Heightened Awareness' rocks along nicely at the beginning. The songs really do evoke images of mountains/open spaces so therefore this recording has plenty of soul despite the seemingly complex nature of some of the arrangements. Anyone in love with guitar based music should buy this!
