"Splazsh" may well take its cues from Drexciya and A Guy Called Gerald ("Black Secret Technology" vintage), but it's not retro. Very similar in style to the sort of stuff the Hyperdub label are putting out at the moment (in particular Ikonika and Burial) but with a bit of beatdown house thrown in for good measure (think Theo Parrish), the music has that light-yet-dark tone that so few electronic artists outside of Detroit have achieved. Most remarkably of all, it somehow retains the "dangerous" feel that all the early house and techno records had (for anyone who remembers "The Apartments", or "The Art of Stalking"?) - no mean feat as techno nears its 25th anniversary (at least by my calculations).
Incidentally, don't be put off by the title of track 13 - this is not some Aphex/Squarepusher/Luke Vibert "Let's give a song a funny title because we're students" wheeze. Check the artist's picture on Discogs: more of a Blake Baxter/Jamie Principle wheeze (maybe?)
