Product Description

Many of us feel comfortable raising boys because we were—and maybe still are—boys. We’re comfortable with rough-and-tumble, with fishing, shooting hoops, and geeking out with technology. But girls? How do you raise a girl? More importantly, how do you raise a Godly girl?

Based on the latest research and his personal experience as the father of five daughters, author David B. Van Heemst details what a father must do in order to give his daughter strong foundations in Christ. With statistics, anecdotes, and discussion questions, Splashing in Puddles: How to Be a Father to Your Daughter brings clarity to fatherhood’s complexity. Van Heemst shows just how crucial a role the father has in the development of his daughter’s relationship with God, herself, and others.

Any man can teach her how to ride a bike. But only one man can teach her how to walk with God.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Info, Reminders and Practical Helps 11 Sept. 2012

Splashing in Puddles is a wealth of information regarding how to be a better father to my daughters (3). It's worth the time if only to educate yourself on what it takes to leave a legacy with your daughter(s) you'll be proud of as a father. Be sure to read the appendices, references, and additional resources sections as well.

Pros:
1) Tons of great information and practical advice for dads about how to engage with our daughters and be the dad they need to grow up healthy. Van Heemst has done the compilation of research and theory you've never had the time to do.
2) Written from a teaching perspective so the "why" is included with the "what".
3) Comes from the heart and head of someone who has walked where he is asking us to walk. Loved the practical examples.

Cons:
1) Some repetition of info and topics. Could have "trimmed the fat" in some areas because there was already loads of solid info.
2) Survey approach to topics in some chapters left me wishing for more (not necessarily all bad because it spurred some good questions and forced me to do some of my own work).

Overall, I'd recommend this book for any dad who wants to be a dad your daughter is proud of and will seek to find in her future partner. Dads cannot avoid the reality that the love and attention we give our daughters is what they'll grow to expect from their husbands. If we have other things that are our priorities or that we value more that quality time with our girls, our daughters will end up in relationships where they settle for someone who values other things over them. That is not a legacy I want to leave. This book is both a good reminder and a good resource for how to be a dad of healthy, mature, joy-filled daugthers.
