I'm in love with a mermaid! read the opening line of Leonard Maltin's original review for Splash. And with the delightful Darryl Hannah in the lead, who could fault Maltin for his public declaration of ardor? The story begins in 1959, when a young boy is rescued from a watery grave by an adolescent mermaid. Twenty-five years later, the boy has grown up--and lo and behold, it's Tom Hanks. Meanwhile, the mermaid, likewise grown up, has surfaced in search of Hanks, her long-lost love. On dry land, the mermaid is able to walk about on legs; any contact with salt water, and she reverts to her half-fish form. Adopting the name of Madison from a New York street sign, the girl manages to win Hanks' heart. Alas, a secret government lab, populated by such smarmy types as Richard B. Shull and Eugene Levy, captures Madison for research purposes--and possible vivisection. Egged on by his brother John Candy, Hanks rescues his beloved, joining her in the ocean depths as a mer-man (mer-fellow? mer-guy?) A captivating confection from the peerless creative team of director Ron Howard and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, Splash was a winner all the way--especially at the box office, where the $11 million film racked up a huge profit. Historical sidebar: Splash was the first release from Disney's Touchstone Pictures division.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I remember seeing this movie AT THE MOVIES - yes I'm THAT old !!

It was showing on the television one Sunday afternoon and my daughter was entranced! She kicked and screamed up a fuss when the ads came on. She just stared and stared at Daryl Hannah (ie Madison) so I thought I'd look around to see if it was on DVD. I thought I'd find in bargain bins at local department stores but to no avail. When I saw it here on Amazon.uk and at such a cheap price, I snapped it up.

I'm very happy with the price and it was delivered in next to no time at all.

Suffice to say, this movie is my daughter's obsession! She has now developed a love of all things mermaid.

And a note to any parents - this movie is perfect for young children. There are no sex scenes, no swearing, no violence. It's just a really fun movie with some sad bits and happy bits complete with a happy ending.

A lovely film that my 3 year old daughter watches again and again and again.

This had been my favourite movie when I was younger, I have been telling my daughter, 4, all about the mermaid (she loves mermaids) and told her about how Madison says her name in Mermaid language and all the tvs shatter, she really wanted to see the movie so I bought it, we've watched it a few times, she loves this movie as much as I do, Daryl Hannah and Tom Hanks are just perfect for this movie, it always brings a tear to my eye when Madison is 'discovered to be a mermaid'. The movie takes you on highs, slight lows, laughter, you can really be taken away within this movie, go with it and enjoy, it's brilliant and a must-see-movie for everyone. Some of the scenes where the mermaid is swimming about in the sea are so lovely and you can believe she's a real mermaid, her tail looks the part and she plays the part beautifully. You also get to see the auditions of Daryl and Tom in bonus features which is nice to see.

Yet another whim purchase on my part, I remembered seeing this for the first time when I was about 10 and enjoying it, so when I saw it in a sale I thought why not get it.

Watching it again after so long brought back some really nice memories of viewing it the first time around and reminded me just why I had liked the film so much in the first place. Daryl Hannah is perfect as the innocent and totally captivating Madison, whilst Tom Hanks plays the sweet and down on his luck Allen who falls head over heels in love with her brilliantly. The film is peppered with a mixture of sweet, funny and moving moments leaving a real feelgood feeling behind when the credits roll. Eugene Levy and John Candy are equally fantastic in their supporting roles and the plot well thought out and developed.

If you've never seen this film, that made stars of Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, then now's your chance. Don't miss it!

In the first of Ron Howard's and Tom Hanks' collaborations, Hanks stars as Allen Bauer, an unlucky in love man who travels to Cape Cod, where he meets a beautiful woman, who has a secret, she is a mermaid.

In perhaps a forgotten gem of the 80's, Howard delivers a heart warming tale about one man and his unlucky in love life, and how the extraordinary can bring out the hearts desires in a truly good funny and ultimately tale.

Hardly his best role, Hanks still delivers in a cliché hero role as Allen, someone all men can relate to. A man who needs to get over his own personal fear in his pursuit for happiness.

Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) is excellent in the role of Madison the mermaid. The way Hannah portrays her makes you wonder how a real person would feel coming into an unknown environment and having to learn someone else's language. She is a joy to watch and the onscreen relationship with Hanks is perfect, exactly what was needed to produce the wonderful outcome.

Who says romantic comedies are soft mushy stuff? There is plenty of action and suspense in this 1984 comedy to keep everyone entertained.

This is a true family classic, an old fashioned soft tale that is consistently entertaining and funny, something which is rare in modern day cinema.

Eugene Levy (SCTV Network 90) is the funniest in the entire film with a daft character who is simply loveable despite being the villain of the picture.

The whole concept of scientific experiments and animal cruelty is an intriguing side story, and makes you think what would happen today if an unknown creature was found.

Though consistent and funny, it is so by following plenty of conventions, which can give an essence of predictability, but nonetheless it is a heart warming entertaining tale.

Such a fantastic movie, and a favorite from my childhood. Everyone in this movie is amazing and there are so many funny moments... John Candy is especially hilarious. And it goes without saying that Daryl Hannah is stunning (I was always fascinated by those hips of hers, too) and it's pretty awesome to see so much of her, if you get my drift. Speaking of which, Blu-ray brings out A LOT OF DETAIL that even the dvd didn't reveal... and that's quite thrilling. Actually I'm kind of amazed this is PG and the nudity isn't even mentioned (but maybe that's a good thing in an otherwise stiflingly puritan Hollywood where it's ok to show gratuitous violence but one nipple and people freak).

The other thing that's awesome in this movie is all the scenery, both the shots of NYC and also all the underwater stuff (really gorgeous sea life and lots of Hannah swimming through). Again, Blu-ray gets us that close () to the original film quality and it's beautiful.

Alas, the only negative I noticed on my Blu-ray player is that the A-B loop function is disabled, and so is the zoom function. But lots of Blu-rays seem to do that these days, the zoom is somehow mapped to the scene selection function which is a bit frustrating.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
