5.0 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD SHORT STORY 17 Mar 2012

Detective Stride is working on a case, women are being killed and the murderer is sending photographs to the press. Meanwhile strange events are taking place in Alison Malville's life and she is beginning to think her husband may in fact be the serial killer.
I have never read any books by this author before, but most certainly will now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good short novel 19 Mar 2012
By MM
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought this was a very good short novel, with plenty of suspense and a captivating plot. Alison and Michael's marriage is going through a rocky patch, and Michael's business is failing. Alison is losing trust in her husband and what she discovers leads her to believe her husband could be a serial killer. I liked the pace at which this reads - it's not rushed, unlike many books of this genre - and it's well-written. My heart was in my mouth at times and I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it!

I hadn't realised how short this novel was which was a disappointment in the end- in more ways than one.

The characters were mostly well written and the fact that both the husband and wife at the centre of the story believed that the other was committing a series of murders was nicely done. It had been written in such a way that either of them could credibly by the killer. But then! Did FREEMAN (capitals are his preference not mine) suddenly lose interest?

The book ends abruptly, if not prematurely and in a rushed clichéd and predictable manner.

What a frustration and I wished I hadn't spent the time getting drawn into the lives of these characters to be suckered in that way.

I see from other reviews that there is a series by this author featured the detective Stride. Well he hardly features in this one and certainly doesn't get to do any investigation.

If this book was a sampler then a sharper, better written ending would have been better and would certainly have made me look for other novels by this author. As it is I'm not sure.

Sorry, but I just didn't enjoy this and eventually got bored enough to skip to the end. Too transparent a plot and very laboured.

To be honest it is such a long time since I read this book that I can't remember much of the story. I did note somewhere that it didn't impress me.
