This book covers the famous Arctic archipelago (named Spitsbergen when discovered by the Dutch in 1596, but now more commonly referred to as Svalbard - the Viking word for 'cold coast'). On one side there is a clear and uncluttered map of the archipelago, with useful annotations; on the reverse there are excellent biographical summaries of 27 noted explorers (including Horatio Nelson who came here as a 14 year old midshipman!) plus brief descriptions and colour photographs of the more common plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals.

Other reviews led me to believe this was a very good map. It may be the best available but the actual map of Svalbard is only about A3 size (i.e. 2 x A4). True, there is a lot of other information (on both sides) but I bought the map for the map. Had I seen it first I probably wouldn't have bothered.

Disappointed with the quality of this map - which looks like a freeby from the tourist information office. Unfortunately, this is the only map of the area available (to my knowledge) and thus cannot be bypast by the traveller to these parts. Make sure to have it laminated though, or keep it in a waterproof pouch, or it will not survive the journey.

We had expected something a little nearer the O.S. It does give us some idea as to where we hope to be going.
