Reviews

The Spitfire is probably the most famous aircraft ever to fly. Walk-arounds show the unique technical advances that were used to develop both the Merlin and Griffon-engined marks of Spitfire. Stunning air-to-air footage including a simulated dogfight between a Spitfire and Me109, rare archive film, new aircraft production and exclusive interviews with the men who designed, built, flew and continue to fly these extraordinary aircraft.

Whilst this is a good documentary of the early development of the Spitfire, it concentrates heavily on the Spitfire's role in the Battle of Britain.
The Battle was over by September 1940, the further development of the Spitfire to the end of the war is not given justice in this DVD. The development of the Mk V is brief and the Mk IX and XIV equally brief.
The Mk's VI, VII, VIII and XII are not even mentioned.
Through these variants, the aircraft continued to be evolved to meet the changing threat and that story is rarely told.
There are enough records of the BoB already without adding to them - it was a missed opportunity to tell the story of the Spitfire's wartime exploits through all 6 six years.

There are sections of this that are superb. The dog fight and the interviews with the pilots in particular. It covers the early history and some of the technicalities not in huge depth, but well. Most of the emphasis is on the Battle Of Britain, which is understandable and if there is a criticism it is that later marques don't get much attention at all. Malta, the Middle East, D Day and beyond don't get mentioned.

Don't take this as a criticism, this is highly watchable and well though out. It could have done with a second disk to extend the story and make it more complete. One of the pilots extolled the virtues of the XIV - and expecting that this was a oeuvre... blink and you'd have missed what followed. But - what it does do, it does very well.
