A remake of the controversial 1979 cult classic, I Spit on Your Grave retells the horrific tale of writer Jennifer Hills, who takes a retreat from the city to a charming cabin in the woods to start on her next book. But Jennifer's presence in the small town attracts the attention of a few morally deprived locals who set out one night to teach this city girl a lesson. They break into her cabin to scare her. However, what starts out as terrifying acts of humiliation and intimidation, quickly and uncontrollably escalates into a night of physical abuse and torturous assault. But before they can kill her, Jennifer sacrifices her broken and beaten body to a raging river that washes her away. As time passes, the men slowly stop searching for her body and try to go back to life as usual. But that isn't about to happen. Against all odds, Jennifer Hills survived her ordeal. Now, with hell bent vengeance, Jennifer's sole purpose is to turn the tables on these animals and to inflict upon them every horrifying and torturous moment they carried out on her... only much, much worse.

This film when released was in the 'video nasty' category, and like so many others were ultimately banned, many quite rightly have not seen the light of day since.
This film however seems somehow to portray a sense of justification for the violence in the early stages being balanced by an equally violent revenge spree.
In truth the acting isn't brilliant, but in the main acceptable, the blue-ray transfer is also a bit below-par.
It's just one of those films that you feel, because of the hype, you must watch.
The violence is pretty graphic and not comfortable to watch, but the end does seem to justify watching as the four rapists get their comeuppance.
The film has been re-made it promised to be even more graphic than the original......must admit just how realistic do we need to see such violence ? (In my opinion having seen the re-make, though graphically more violent than the original, i felt it fell short
in the portrayal department)

THE MOVIE

The 2010 remake of 1978's I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE / DAY OF THE WOMAN is one of the very few remakes that are actually better than the original.
Sarah Butler delivers a stunningly brilliant performance as Jennifer Hills, besting even the most degrading scenes in the most convincing way. When she gets her revenge one can only root for her. The character development from victim to avenger is believable and well acted.
Director Steven R. Monroe did a great job taking the focus of the endless rape scenes of the original and increasing the revenge part, which is far more satisfying than in the original and far more brutal. The gore effects are well done and extremely unsettling.
The UK version loses some of the intensive rape/abuse scenes, but the revenge and gore remain completely intact, which makes it still highly watchable.
Not for everyone's taste - extremely violent. Banned in Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand and (o surprise!) Germany.
My favorite film of 2010.

This is a remake of the old 1980's rape genre films for sick people. The plots are basically the same. A woman is raped. Woman gets revenge. Sometimes it is an abduction or a home invasion, or in this case, a woman is taken in her cabin by a bunch of rednecks. As compared to the original, the nudity was less in the remake and the rape scene less graphic. There I said it.

Oh yes, the characters are more developed and the torture inflicted by the woman is a tad better, but is that why people watch rape films, for character? The same could be said for the remake of "Last House on the Left," they watered down the rape and nudity. I can't believe with all these silicon soft core stars, they could not have picked something with more eye candy for the starring role instead of someone who can act.

Decent folks will want to stay away from this movie. Sickos would be better off with the original or a David Hess film festival. Anyone up for "A Dirty Western" remake?

I have not seen Meir Zarchi's 1978 original production of
this brutal tale but remember a little of the controversy
it generated at the time. Steven R. Monroe's remake takes the
revenge film formula to the most uncomfortable limits imaginable.

The horrific experiences endured by the character Jennifer Hills
are reversed in a victim-becomes-predator transformation which
seeks to redress the balance but only compounds violence with
further unspeakable violence. If the intention of the director was
to shock us then he has achieved his goal with a film of vacuous
and thoroughly nasty excess. It is a morally bankrupt invention.

At your own risk.

This is a movie I personally thoroughly enjoyed. I will admit purely for the fact that as a horror fan, I usually see films where women are butchered and mutilated at the hands of males...and females. It's nice to see the victim get the upper hand for once.

Although this film is very gorey I did enjoy it. Everyones opinion will differ. To some the revenge will seem over the top, a bit unrealistic and morally out of order.

But I believe although the subject matter rape/torture etc is quite heavy/serious it isn't a film to be over analysed and taken too seriously. It is what it is, woman raped and humilated by hillbillies, woman gets her revenge on the men.

I will admit to being one of those who along with my mum was sat their cheering along. After all, it isn't real. Its just a movie.

I give it four stars because I enjoyed it, but its not a masterpiece or anything special and to a lot of people could be considered unsavoury, not for the feint hearted!
