Take note - most of the reviews below are for Jed's earlier books, and horribly out of date for this publication...
For anyone who thinks this book is dated, or less than apocalyptically hard hitting, then read it again. In the very best neo-Zen tradition, it calls for a critical eye to be cast upon EVERYTHING in the spiritual lexicon - and that's not an invitation to nihilism either. McKenna asks the earnest spiritual seeker to hack away at the vestigial beliefs, symbols and nonsense that clutter most people's attitudes towards their own development. His assertion is that (in the spirit of apophatic theology a la Dionysius the Areopagite, Richard Rose and Alan Watts), you will come to the truth through remotion. He describes it as a painful process, and one you only engage in because you absolutely have no choice. He also points out that there are NO SELLING POINTS!!
It's a riveting read, like all his others - guaranteed to get you asking the right questions, and make you less likely to get shaken down by the myriad of spiritual highwaymen out there. However, I reckon the first question seekers should be asking is "...Does enlightenment really exist?" I've met some compelling and radiant characters in my life, but for the life of me, I've not been able to categorically affirm that point. Bit of a bummer, that, but I'm still trying.
