I was lent an old second hand copy of this book and encouragd to read it. At first I found it difficult to pick up. It seemed a to have little to do with me. A book written by a Jesuit for Jesuits, leading other Jesuits, through an Ignatian retreat. I am not a Jesuit nor have I been on an Ignatian retreat. I felt like someone with basic medical knowledge stumbling apon a brain surgery manual, curiously studying its pages with no expectation that it would be of any help when dealing with a cut knee! I found myself increasingly engroased by the wisdom and common sense of this book. Coupled with a fascinating insight into a very different world from my own, were ideas and observations that resonated with my own experience of being human.
As the time to return the book drew near, I realised that I was reluctant to return it. It is not a book to read quickly or one that can be enjoyed without reflection. The copy I was lent was published in the seventies, with small print and a battered cover. I hoped to find a similar secondhand copy. I was delighted to find that Amazon had brand new copies improved by easier to read print. No wonder that this unpromising looking book had been republished. It is one of the most thought revoking, encouraging and wise books I have ever read.
