Book Description

14 April 2011
Henri Nouwen, the world-renowned spiritual guide and counsellor, understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community, and relationships. Though he counselled many people during his lifetime, his principles of spiritual direction and formation were never written down. Two of Nouwen's long-time students, Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird, have taken his famous course in spiritual direction and supplemented it with his unpublished writings. Spiritual Formation showcases Nouwen's life-long effort to reconstruct the five classical stages of spiritual development as movements in the journey of faith.

Product Description

Review

I always knew I was in the presence of a spiritual master when I was with Henri Nouwen. Here are some simple, wise words that will allow the master to continue to teach. --Richard Rohr, O.F.M., author of The Naked Now

One of the book's many strengths is its integration of an area especially important to Nouwen, the contemplation of icons and other works of art - visio divina - in order 'to behold the beauty of the Lord'. --Jim Forest, author of Praying with Icons and The Road to Emmaus

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 21 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback
This is a thrilling book. I was raised Catholic but have been disappointed by my experience of the church as an adult. I have turned to Buddhism, philosophy and Kabbalah for spiritual wisdom. I had all but given up on my Catholic faith. This book has changed all that. It is deeply wise and profound. Any spiritual reader would gain from it. I will read it again and buy copies for my loved ones. This book will become an integral part of my own personal spiritual library. This review does not do the book justice. It is deeply moving and wise and never belittles the reader - wherever you are on the journey!

This is an important read for anyone who wishes to journey further on their spiritual path, written by a much lauded author. The impression it makes relates to where the reader is on their own path. It is worth the attempt to take another step.

4.0 out of 5 stars faith, formation and Henri Nouwen 1 Aug 2011
By J. DOUGLAS VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Following the movement of the Spirit is no easy invitation, so the companionship of Nouwen and friends is a welcomed help in this wrestle. Accountability, community, and relationships lie at the heart of Nouwen's unique lens on spiritual growth! Though he counseled many people during his lifetime, his principles of spiritual formation were never written down. Now, Michael Christensen, one of Nouwen's longtime students, and Rebecca Laird have taken his famous course in spiritual formation and supplemented it with his unpublished writings to create a definitive record. The beauty of God is a compelling vision painted in this strong and challenging title.

Nouwen was recognized as a spiritual master. Reading the book I enthusiastically adhere to this opinion. In this brief book edited by his disciples he goes to the core of spiritual formation.
