Book Description

Spiritual Depression is one of the great classics of the modern Church and tackles the big question: If Christianity is such "good news" why are its followers often unhappy?

From the Back Cover

Spiritual Depression is one of the great classics of the modern Church and tackles the big question: If Christianity is such "good news" why are its followers often unhappy? Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones was possibly the greatest Christian preacher and teacher of the twentieth century. A medical doctor by training, Spiritual Depression draws together his professional understanding of the mind with a profound understanding of Christian teaching and the Bible. Spiritual Depression diagnoses the causes of the ill feeling that many Christians experience. It prescribes the practical care that is needed to lift people's spirits and bring them freedom, power and joy. Spiritual health is possible and this book explains how everyone can grasp it for themselves.

George Verwer makes two comments on the cover. One is "One of the most outstanding books that has ever been written." The other is "The title may have confused or frightened some people... This book is really a mini encyclopaedia on how to know God and to walk with God." To my shame, I should admit that the second of these quotes was the main reason I didn't buy it earlier. I wanted a book about Spiritual Depression.

Of course, this book is about spiritual depression, but depression in the wide sense of including feeling a bit down from time to time. It does tackle the deeper, longer term kind as well.

It is a series of sermons given by the author (a medical doctor as well as a preacher). As such, each chapter takes a few verses from the Bible which speak about depression, and provides an exposition of them. And, apart from the fact that the quotes are from the KJV (not a great hindrance), I can't find much wrong with it, except maybe that he could deal with the excellent contexts of the passages better, but that would take more space... It probably says a lot that of the three best Christian books / articles I have read on depression, this is one, True Spirituality by F.A.Schaeffer is another, and the third (in "Songs of Experience" by Roy Clements) quotes extensively from this one.

Basically, the book is really good and deals with the issues really well.

A Captivating Read 3 April 2012
Format:Paperback
Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones 1965 book, `Spiritual Depression', deals with various problems that Christians are regularly confronted with, which could, if not dealt with, lead to what he calls `depression of the soul.' Each chapter covers a separate topic, and he explains with accurate detail what causes these troubles, and how they should be treated; beginning each chapter with a Biblical quotation that emphasizes the theme. Overall a good and comforting read for struggling Christians.

Excellent book that delivers very useful advice for those who do struggle in their Christian walk and whose churches are more interested in throwing rules at them and not being encouragers or devoid of love.
