Product Description

Four years before the events of The Spirit Thief, Miranda Lyonette was a young apprentice Spiritualist on the cusp of a promising career. But on the eve of her return from bonding a wind spirit, a night that should have been a celebration, she finds instead that her father has come to take her home. Now, Miranda must choose between her duty to her family and her future at the Spirit Court. But while she's trying to make her parents see reason and avoid an arranged marriage to a man she can't stand, she stumbled across the one spirit who needs her more than any other, a caged ghosthound who doesn't want her help. To save him, Miranda will have to earn the dog's trust, but what she gets in return is a friendship deeper than anything she expected.

4.0 out of 5 stars An "Eli Monpress" novella 20 July 2014
By Book Addict TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
I hadn't read any of "The Legend of Eli Monpress" books prior to reading this novella; but this was no hindrance as the author set the scene well plus as events occur prior to the Eli Monpress books, I didn't feel as if I'd missed any back history. For established fans of this series, this novella details how Spiritualist Miranda Lyonette meets and befriends her massive ghosthound Gin plus she utilises the spirits at her command to get her out of some tricky situations.

Overall I enjoyed this short story. Miranda is a feisty heroine who is clearly a woman ahead of her time in a mediaeval type world in which some undertake the learning to listen to, cajole and command the elements around them. On the strength of my enjoyment of this novella I started the first of the Eli Monpress books and confess I found myself setting it aside often enough to make me realise I really had no interest in it. I managed a fair few chapters, but I found Eli somewhat unlikeable and underhand, whilst Miranda is limited to what she can do and doesn't shine as strongly as she does in this novella. Apologies to the author but I won't be pursuing this series any further.

It was good to see something of Miranda's earlier life. A nice story that kept me reading right to the end.

If you've read the other Eli Monpress books, this is a must as it explains so much about one of the main characters. Definitely recommend.
