Product Description

Product Description:
This is not a kitchen design book. It is about what a kitchen is - or should be. Traditionally, the kitchen was a place of feminine nurturing and sustenance, a place of safety in which culinary and psychological magic both took place. Sadly, nowadays we have lost balance in our homes. Many of us no longer have a hearth, a living fire. The heart of the home is all too often replaced by a status symbol of clinical modern design. This book includes advice on: how to bring out the potential of the kitchen; considering its history, mythology and psychology; how to use colour, sound, scent and light in the room; furnishings and decoration, creative storage and finishing touches; and simple rituals and blessings for the kitchen - smudging, cleansing and rituals.

About the Author:
Jane Alexander is a highly successful author and journalist -- notably with The Daily Mail. She has a life long interest in mind body spirit issues and now lives in the Somerset countryside

Little gem 7 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Speaking as someone who likes to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking, eating, drinking, reading, listening to the radio, talking and getting involved in the general melee of family, I am heartened and warmed by this little gem of a book. Beautifully presented with lots of evocative photography, which doesn't veer too much into the glib Ideal Home territory, it's about how we can make something of our kitchen, something soulful, something away from the IKEA and Abilgail's party syndrome, where nothing is to be touched because it cost so much money. Believe it or not there are people out there who don't think kitchens are for cooking in, Spirit of the Kitchen is the opposite - it is a celebration of one of the most loving places in the house. Put it alongside the Elizabeth David.

This book is a meditation on spaces, colour and says more through well chosen photos than text.
Achieving the look will depend on how well you can match your home of course, but it also made me think about what shade and light achieve in our home.
Its not about new appliances but ambiance.

After enjoying _Spirit of the Bedroom_ I ordered this one, _Spirit of the Kitchen_, and wasn't disappointed. Inspires me to think through what contributes to each living space and what detracts, distracts,or drains.
