Review

Praise for Katharine Kerr and the Deverry novels:

‘An unusually scholarly writer of fantasy’ Telelgraph

‘Much as I dislike comparing anything to The Lord of the Rings, I have to admit that on this occasion it’s justified’ Interzone

‘Kerr is a master of her trade…She has created a world that might very well go on for ever, and this one reader sincerely hopes it does.’ Vector

‘An extensive and complete world, whose endlessly fascinating details grow book by book’ Starlog

Product Description

Book thirteen of the celebrated Deverry series, an epic fantasy rooted in Celtic mythology that intricately interweaves human and elven history over several hundred years.

‘A dagger laid against our throat.’

So Prince Dar of the Westlands calls Zakh Gral, a new fortress built by the Horsekin, the ancient enemies of his people. To help him destroy this threat, the elven prince has called upon his allies: the dwarven folk of the northern mountains and the human men of Deverry to the east. Their leaders know that if the Westlands fall to the Horsekin, their own throats will feel that dagger next. Joining them are two powerful dragons, who have their own bitter reasons to hate the Horsekin.

But the fanatical Horsekin believe that they have the most powerful ally of all: a new goddess. Alshandra's priestesses have announced that she has given the Horsekin the lands belonging to the prince – and that his people must be utterly destroyed.

Rooted in Celtic mythology and intricately interweaving human and elven history over several hundred years, Katharine Kerr’s dazzling saga tells of ancient enmities and undying friendships experienced through many lives. Epic fantasy on a truly grand scale.

This is a fine story provided you know what has come before in this long series. It isn't meant to be the last book because it leaves too many ends untied. A true Celtic knot wouldn't leave so much uncertain - though of course Deverry history is no doubt untidy at whatever point you stop at. The two main sections continue the war against the Alshandra Horsekin and there's also material on Nevyn's earlier life, involving Brour/Alastyr and Loddlaen. A good many personal wyrds are sorted out, but the individual stories of the communities of Cerr Cawnen and Haen Marn aren't continued in this book - and it happens that they are the homes of some of the more interesting characters of the series! No doubt "The Spirit Isle' will finally sort this out. With Nevyn/Neb and Jill/Branna still youthful and Evander gone, there's also less sheer dweomer/fantasy and rather more politics/war in the main sections than some of the predecessors.

Penultimate Deverry! 25 July 2006
Format:Paperback
As a long time fan of the series, I found the previous book, Gold Falcon, slightly disappointing in its lack of a past life section. Spirit Stone suffers no such problem, and the Ebany flashback fills in quite a few gaps. The story widens to include some surprising new good guys, and although I love the main Neb and Branna story I was quite pleased to see it take a back seat while the plot thickens. Shadow Isle, the final installment promised for 2008 has quite a few plot strands to wrap up, but Spirit Stone has given me the confidence that Kerr will provide a satisfying, and not totally predictable, finale to this fantastic series.

Katherine Kerr has done it yet again with this book, the entire series has been gripping, and most wonderfully written. Every page brings something new to the story, and makes you want to keep on reading page after beautiful page.

Katherine, just for the record, I love you. Thank you for all the wonderful hours of pleasure your words have given me.
