Jewel's Finest,
By
This review is from: Spirit (Audio CD)
Jewel - Spirit"Spirit" was Jewel's second album and was released in November 1998. It sold hugely in America from the off, and with good reason - there isn't a bad song on it. Although her debut, "Pieces of You", is a strong album with some excellent numbers on it, this release is a better vehicle for what I think is her key strength - her voice. The first song that really demanded my attention was "Hands", one of the singles released from the album. The fact that it's more of a piano-based song, rather than a guitar song, marked it out as slightly different from the songs that came before. The verses, in particular, are just beautifully sung. "Kiss the Flame" and "Enter from the East" have quite a bit in common with "Hands" - very gentle songs, with beautiful melodies that really play to Jewel's voice. In both cases, however, the music centres more around the guitar rather than the piano. It's not all about the gentle and the mellow though - there are a couple of excellent songs that have a bit more life to them. "Down So Long", another of the album's singles, would be another of the album's standout tracks. As with "Life Uncommon" and "Do You", Jewel gets a bit more support from the band - electric guitars and what sounds suspiciously like a hammond organ weigh in. It's hard to pick out which one of these songs is my favourite - it always seems to be the one I'm listening to ! With an 'official' listing of 13 songs, "Spirit" also includes an additional track called "This Little Bird" - one that makes the album a little unusual. It's the only song on the album that Jewel neither wrote nor (believe it or not) provided the lead vocals for. Written by John D. Loudermilk and performed by Jewel's mother, Nedra, it's tagged onto the end of 'Absence of Fear' (another of the album's highlights). On the basis of this song, Nedra might just be worth a recording contract of her own.... The version of the CD I have comes with a 5-track 'bonus' live CD. Taken from a concert in Madrid in 1999, and featuring Steve Poltz on guitar, three of the tracks are taken from the 'main' CD of this album. The two remaining songs are among the best "Pieces of You" had to offer - "Who Will Save Your Soul ?" and "Foolish Games". All superbly performed, and appreciated by the audience, but I think "Do You" just sneaks it on the live CD. Excellent stuff - if mostly acoustic and tuneful is your thing, this is well worth picking up.

Absence Of Fear,
By
This review is from: Spirit (Audio CD)
"Spirit" is an unusual second album, at least to my ear. Her first album with a couple of exceptions was almost like poems set to music, while this second album maintains the poetic lyrics, but this time set to more melodic pieces, and for me the sound has a greater amount of variety for the listener than "Pieces of You". The album focuses on the spiritual side of Jewel, and as such it is a bit of a risk, but for me it paid off as I much prefer this album to her debut, though certainly that is a fine album as well.
Jewel is fearless in putting her philosophies and spiritualism into the songs on this album. Opening with the never-give-up "Deep Water" the album moves right along with "What's Simple Is True" which has the optimistic message that one continues to learn and grow throughout their life. Next up is "Hands", which is a song about her faith. She returns to the subject of love with "Kiss The Flame", which is followed by another very optimistic piece "Down So Long". "Innocence Maintained" again goes to one of her philosophies and general optimism, even in the face of such horrible events. "Jupiter" is another song which looks at Jewel's philosophy on love "neither timid nor tame" and how it makes her feel. "Fat Boy" is the shortest piece on the album, and the one song which is rather weak. The message is a good one, but the music doesn't hold up when compared to the rest of the album. "Barcelona" is a bit different as it deals with loneliness, but even when confronted with it she is looking forward to a time when she is free to fly. "Life Uncommon" is another song about her faith and the strength that comes from it. "Do You" perhaps doesn't fit lyrically with the rest of the album, but it is a strong piece musically, and it has several messages for society as well. "Absence of Fear" is an extraordinary piece, simple musically, and yet quite beautiful both lyrically and musically. The album closes with the hidden track "This Little Bird" sung by Jewel's mother, Nedra Carroll, backed by Jewel. A nice piece, and a good close to a very fine album. This special release of the album also comes with a second CD with five live tracks. Three of the tracks are live versions of pieces on this album, and two are live versions of tracks from her first album. It opens with "Down So Long", followed by "What's Simple is True", "Foolish Games", "Do You", and "Who Will Save Your Soul?" It is a nice bonus disc, but nothing extra-special. Overall, this is a very strong follow-up to her debut. Jewel shows no fear in opening herself up even more, if that is possible, to her inner thoughts and feelings than she did on "Pieces of You". I feel the music is much better on this album and suits the lyrics more than it did on her first album. Though it is certainly not perfect, it is well worth a listen and almost all the tracks have grown on me on repeated listening.

I Have Bought Most of Jewel's albums ,
This one [ Spirit Bonus CD X Madrid ]. I loved it for the live tracks , With "Who Will Save Your Soul" track by Jewel , it is live with the band , I personally like the live acoustic track on my other Jewel "Spirit CD with Bonus Live track" better , When Jewel does acoustic live , for me it is just so very much better . But as I said the bonus CD is live songs with a band and I love it , Great . Good Value and a really good listen . and I am very happy with it . and of course Jewel is a very talented and gifted singer .
