5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten gem.............. 15 Nov 2011
By os TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Fans of great guitar playing will certainly enjoy this sprightly and varied offering from John Williams. Featuring compositions from the likes of Villa Lobos,Andrew York,Ponce and Piazolla, this is a very likable and unpretentious disc.John Williams plays with such assurance and musicality that the whole thing just gracefully glides by,unfolding with track after track of memorable and involving music. So much so,it's easy to forget just what a great player Williams is -his tone, ability to create dynamics and move flawlessly around the fingerboard is nothing short of brilliant. Not only that, throughout his career he has always sought new musical challenges, as this album so aptly demonstrates.

So if you want to relax or listen more intently, this disc can operate equally well on either level.

Choosing a favorite tracks is hard, but I particularly enjoy the Charlie Byrd triptych 'Three Blues' and the lovely 'Berceuse' by Lero Brouwer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Performance of American Music 12 Feb 2002
By J. Blilie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Williams records another great CD. From the thrilling opening, "Sunburst" by Andrew York, through Mangore', Brouwer, and Charlie Byrd, the music is very well-chosen and impeccably performed. Bursting with energy, South American dance rhythms or slow and melacholy, these are great pieces.
This music goes in a completely different direction from, say, Bach or Scarlatti or Albeniz or Tarrega. It's the American sound in many of its guises. Wonderful music. One of my favorite classical guitar CD's (up there with "Parkening Plays Bach" and "Songs My Father Taught Me," by Pepe Romero.)

4.0 out of 5 stars High Spirited Performance 20 Feb 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The first 11 recordings from this CD are among my favorite of all guitar recordings, epecially "Sunburst," "Aconquija," "Verano Porteno," "Natalia," and "Cueca." Both the performances and the recording quality are outstanding. I'm just not that fond of the last 7 compositions (except maybe "El Colibri").

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Music 16 Dec 2012
By Darrell W. Hunt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Were I required to pare my CD collection to 10, this would likely be a top candidate for inclusion. Williams is one the best classical guitarists living, and anyone who plays or knows the guitar and understands the difference between what a classical guitarist is up to versus, let's say, a blues master, understands the difference in degree of difficulty and challenge. What Williams and other great classical guitarists, e.g. Odair Assad, do with the instrument is astounding.

Williams has done much to introduce the world to music from South America either written or transcribed for guitar, and this CD includes some of the best examples of this music. This is simply great music, but especially so for lovers of the classical guitar.
