Book Description

Atmospheric stand alone fantasy from bestselling author Mickey Zucker Reichert (author of the Renshai novels) and talented newcomer Jennifer Wingert

Product Description

Kiarda lives in a magic-laced land where a war between god and goddess has led to a war among mortals, and where the reconciliation of the immortals has brought wondrous benefits and a 'Joyous Reunion' to the people of both the River and the Marchlands. With their weapons stored away and the learning of the art of warfare now forbidden, peace should be assured for eternity, but even in peacetime there is peril... For this land has become a land unable to defend itself against the arrival of a well-trained foreign army complete with mages who practise the forbidden sixth magic - the magic of destruction. At greatest risk from the invaders are magic-gifted healers and the spirit-linked: those men and women blessed by the gods to be linked with an animal who shares their thoughts, emotions and even physical sensations from birth. These are the people the mages have marked out for annihilation. Kiarda, more closely linked than any other to her spirit fox (for the kit died as she was born leaving its soul nowhere to live but in Kiarda's body) is in more danger than any other of her kind. She and her companions find themselves responsible for warning their people of their peril, but with only one trained warrior in her party, what chance does Kiarda have of saving her world from destruction...

One of the rare books where you don't feel the urge to skip chapsters to find out what's happening to your favourite characters - everything's equally interesting. Style throughout can be quite light-hearted and funny, as well as dramatic. Only one thing: The epilogue ruins everything!!! Okay so if you don't read it you won't know all that happened, but anything you make up yourself is better than what's in the epilogue!! Trust me :)

My Review 14 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I have always rated Mickey Zucker Reichert as an exceptional fantasy writer. Anyone who ever enjoyed the books of David Gemmell will find that Mickey has a similar writing style and an equal ability to provide that adrenaline rush that accompanies all stories of adventure and sorcery.
This book takes the reader into a world of spirit bonding, where children with a particular bloodline are magically linked to an animal at the time of their birth. Although in my experience this is not a new concept, the way that Mickey Zucker Reichert and Jennifer Wingert deliver this story is at once captivating and exciting. A really good book and one that I can heartily reccommend to any fantasy fan.

I have fallen away from reading most fantasy for a while. When I pulled this off the shelf I had low expectations for it. Fortunately, it was quite a treat to read.

This book starts out with a well created medieval society that declares a lasting peace (referred to as the Devine Peace in this book). Now that lasting peace has come ot the land any form of war is outlawed. The healers are still allowed to use magic to heal the sick and at some periods, when a baby animal is born at the exact moment nearby when a human baby is born, their spirits are linked. I admit that at first I didn't take to the concept well. But I persevered and my perseverance was richly rewarded.

This is a well-told story of good and evil. The lines are blurred well so that some good become evil, while some evil become good. There is a satisfying detail that helps develop this into a truly fine fantasy novel. If you like a well told story, fantasy, swords, and sorcery you'll love this book. It has earned keeper status on my shelf.
