5.0 out of 5 stars The best female vocalist of recent times 11 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
From the first beautiful lines of 'Deep Water' to the end of 'Abscence of Fear' you will experience pure musical bliss! Jewel's pure lilting voice flows through the variety of songs, all of which are uplifting and beautiful. Highlights are 'Deep Water', 'Hands', 'Jupiter' and 'Do you'. The lyrics make a refreshing change from the 'I love you baby' theme of recent pop songs - When do you ever hear Britney Spears singing 'Love is a flame neither timid nor tame', to highlight one of many examples. 'Spirit' is what I would call the 'It's a wonderful life' of music. After a bad day I can play this CD and I would almost go as far as to say my faith in humanity is restored! Even the little quotes written on the album cover remain in Jewel's philosophical and uplifting tone - 'We are loved beyond our ability to comprehend' etc. If what I've already said hasn't yet encouraged you to buy this CD, just buy it anyway - you will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple is true 21 Jun 2007
By Mark R. Bannister VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Listening to Jewel is like gazing upon the heavens. I have every Jewel album and have been a fan of hers since she first mesmerised me on daytime TV in the 90s. Spirit tells you all you need to know in the title. Her lyrics are clever, and truly inspirational. Her warm angelic voice gently soars through your mind - it is breathtaking.

This album is beautiful in every respect. The rhythms are infectious, the musical performances skilled and superbly controlled. It is a sensitive production in harmony with Jewel, and this is one of her few albums where everything comes together exceptionally well.

Spirit washes over you, and won't fail to relax you after a long hard day. Jewel's thoughtful, romantic and selfless personality shines in these recordings. They contain gorgeous little melodies and simple memorable harmonies that you'll be humming for days afterwards.

However, although this album is outstanding when compared to the competition, Jewel has lost some of the simplicity and magic she possessed in her 1994 debut Pieces of You. She once had the power to move you to tears almost every song, but in Spirit she is a little kinder on your emotions, and only gives you a lump in your throat on a couple of occasions. But nonetheless, this is beautiful music, and I love it very much. The world would be a sorrier place without her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down So Long 24 Sep 2003
Format:Audio CD
This album rox! I love it there are 2 songs especally: "Down So Long" and "Hands". Some other good songs on this cd are "fat boy" and "deep water". This is such a great cd, some people may say that only her fans would like it but that's not true! Everyone would like it! My best freind listens to Marlyn Manson, Good Charlotte, and Evanessance and she bought the cd! My cousin listens to country music like Shania Twain, Buddy Jewel, and Faith Hill and she bought the cd too! That goes to show you that everyone would like this cd!

I first saw Jewel on The Oprah Winfrey Show.. unbelievable!! The once in a lifetime that I watch it and I discover the idol of my teenage years. Even though I would rate the earlier "Pieces of You" a little higher than "Spirit" in terms of raw emotion and originality, "Spirit" is undeniably the most polished of the two. I bought them both on the same day and immediately loved "Spirit" because even before you've listened to the words the melodies and her voice have carried you along. "Pieces of You" just grew on me until I had to admit to adoring it! Even so some of my favourite songs of all time come from this album - and like all good albums the most outstanding songs after a while are the ones you weren't keen on in the beginning. I simply can't pick out a track I dislike. "Hands" is my all time favourite pick-me-up - but I have to admit that my real favourites now are the tracks more reminiscent of "Pieces of You" such as "Down So Long", "Fat Boy", "Enter from the East" and "Do You". There are a lot of female singer/songwriters out there now and I predict there will be many more. But if you like Dayna Manning, Cindy Alexander, Chantal Kreviazuk, Lisa Loeb and even those of the Sarah MacLachlen camp such as Tara Maclean; even Fiona Apple you will probably take to Jewel. If you haven't already check out the artists from Lilith fair.. you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Poetry 10 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I first came across Jewel on a trip to the states way back in 1997 when she was the talk of the town there yet no one had heard of her back in the UK. After hearing 'Pieces of You' I knew I had to have the album and I became an immediate fan. I eagerly awaited the follow up album and 'Spirit proved to be even better the the first so much so that all my house mates at university went out and bought the album. There are only one or tow songs that I would skip over but my favourite has to be 'Hands' and 'Barcelona'. I later went to see Jewel at the Albert Hall last year and I have to say although our seats weren't all that greta one didn't need to see the stage for her singing was just beyond this world. It left you feeling tranced , I think she is one of the few people who actually sound better in real life then on CD, recordings don't do justice to the power nad range of her voice, but if you don't get the opportunity to see her live then the CD is a very good plan B.
