George achieved something no one can take away in any review or dissecting of this book...he was the first skin to actually write about the cult, from birth to present.....it's all here, and well represented...he's been there, seen it,lived it...maybe better will one day come out,as he himself says in the introduction.... but this is the best and only reccomendation I would make to anyone wanting to learn the history and get an understanding of where skins truly come from...an amalgamation of traditional British working class and Jamaican working class style.....well done George, my copy is still regularly thumbed with both pride and interest, and until that better book comes (?!), this is the boss!!

George Marshall's 'Spirit Of 69'and Nick Knight's 'Skinhead',published ten years earlier, are the two most referred to books in the slender canon of Skinhead literature.Where 'Skinhead'is largely pictorial,'Spirit Of 69' is an exhaustive survey of Skinhead evolution from it's 'hard Mod' roots to the present(well,1994,second edition). All bases are covered in detail-music,fashion,politics,Marshall never flinching from his task, delivering the good, the bad and the downright ugly reality in a consistent 'matey' style.Supplementing the chapters with features on the likes of 'A Clockwork Orange',Richard Allen plus a wealth of archive photography, make this a meticulous labour of love.It is with no arrogant pretence that this now classic is subtitled 'A Skinhead Bible',it being the sworn gospel for anyone with oxblood coursing through their veins.

This is a great book which features the skinhead way of life in pictures and text. You'll be able to read about Oi! music, RAC music, skinwear, sport, etc etc.. It's a great book and a bible to some skins even.. Only downside about it is that it shows skinheads as groups, and not as a real "way of life" (Sharps, nonpoliticals and WP skins).. I'll give it 4 / 5.. Buy it! I did, and I havent regreted it!!

When I first read this book many people said skinheads are about nationalism and voilence, well, this is not true all the information about skinheads is explaining how Hard Mods or gang mods evolved into the skinhead cult.Skinheads listened to soul music originally and were Quite racially tolerant because most their mates were black "rude boys" or "yardies"
